However, unlike Mary Kom's lion-hearted display, her counterpart when down with a whimper. After getting a bye in the 55kg category, Geeta ran into a tough opponent Tonya Verbeek of Canada in the pre-quarterfinals, losing 1-3.

However, she earned a second chance when Verbeek made it to the final and all the competitors who had lost to her were given another opportunity in the repechage round, essentially due to the fact that they had lost to the best.

However, it turned out to be even worse for Geeta as she lost 0-9 to Tetyana Lazareva of Ukraine in the first repechage bout, which ended her campaign.

"I got a second chance but it was entirely my fault that I couldn't proceed further," said a dejected Geeta. "The Ukrainian overpowered me with her strategic move in the first round and the lead was too big to cover up. In the second round the only thing I could have done is to go all out, but that didn't work," she said.
