State governor NN Vohra submitted the resignation in the evening. Earlier, on Friday afternoon, chief minister Omar Abdullah had tweeted: "I have received the resignation of the minister of state for health Shabir Khan and forwarding the same to the governor for acceptance."

The reisgnation comes close on the heels of Khan's own party, the Congress, asking him to step down following demands from the Bharatiya Janata Party and a doctors' body of Kashmir. "The Congress has asked Khan to resign," Jammu and Kashmir Congress spokesperson Ravinder Sharma told reporters hours before the resignation.
