The Punjab government has formulated a policy to bring the state on the international tourist map by promoting eco, adventure, wildlife and pilgrimage tourism.
Stating this on Sunday, tourism minister Punjab Sohan Singh Thandal said Punjab would tap increasing demand for eco, adventure, wildlife and pilgrimage tourism and he had cleared a project in this regard. He said Punjab had rich cultural, historical, religious and ecological legacy, and foreign tourists were attracted towards picturesque locales of the state.
“In Punjab, there are many places not yet tapped and promoted as potential tourist spots,” he added.
Thandal said these tourist spots involved visiting and staying in remote areas, forests and riversides. He suggested tented accommodation at such sites. He added that instead of investing in permanent capital assets, the state government should give real jungle experience to tourists in well-designed tents. He stated that without fiddling with the fragile ecology of forests and wetlands, the tourism department should focus on ecofriendly solutions such as tents and camping sites.
He said keeping in view restrictions on erecting permanent structures in ecologically fragile regions and to promote young tourists to become part of nature, there was a need to promote camping sites with trained guides.
The Punjab government has framed a comprehensive policy, ‘tented accommodation and camping scheme’, to attract tourists from across the globe to visit Punjab and enjoy the virgin beauty of nature, besides religious and cultural heritage, Thandal said.
The minister stated that to set up camping sites and tented accommodation, distinguished promoters in the tourism industry would be invited.
