Three young newbies in the world of Hindi cinema are all set to debut in the Karan Johar-directed film, Student of the Year, also Karan’s first venture that doesn’t star Shah Rukh Khan. With innocence written large on their faces and charm oozing from their personas, it is obvious why Karan decided to cast them in the film that has been produced by him and Gauri Khan. David Dhawan’s son Varun Dhawan, Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter Alia Bhatt and Delhi boy Siddharth Malhotra, were at WWICS (World Wide Immigration Consultancy Services), in SAS Nagar, on Wednesday, to promote their film that hits cinemas this Friday.
Excerpts from their talk about being cast in the movie and their lives:
Fit and famous — Alia Bhatt
Besides a popular last name, Alia closely resembles her mother Soni Razdan. The 19-year-old says with a cute dimpled smile that it didn’t come easy even though she comes from a known Bollywood family. “Debuting in my father’s movie would have been easy, for he would have cast me without thinking of any other option. But, in Student of the Year, I was selected out of 400 girls who auditioned for the role. I lost 16 kg for the movie, and am still trying to lose more. With no training in acting, it was a great learning and enriching experience. I think my mind has aged faster than my body,” she adds.
Sharing her weight loss tips, Alia says, “Starving doesn’t help, rather it decreases the metabolic rate. I drink four litres of water everyday and eat after every two hours.”
About daddy dear, she says, “Dad kept away from the whole procedure (of the making of the film). When I started promoting the movie, he gave me tips such as not wasting energy by smiling unnecessarily for the camera and keeping in mind that we are a team.”
You know she has taken her father’s advice seriously when she seems to go into oblivion as you turn your gaze away from her.
From behind the camera to the front —Varun Dhawan
Varun, who had earlier assisted Karan Johar in the making of My Name is Khan, has this to say about KJo: “He is not only a director or a producer, he even designs clothes, is an anchor and has played a judge. So, he is a multi-talented person and one always gets to learn from him. I’m still a student of cinema, but my dream has come true after working with him.”
The very fit-looking Varun is happy to share his fitness mantra, “My father is a bit overweight, since paranthas are the ideal breakfast option at our home. So, being fit is a task. But I try keeping myself away from them and stick to the new form of exercise called TRX.”
Gaining ground: Siddharth Malhotra
Unlike the other two star kids, Siddharth didn’t have a ‘filmy’ family connection. He started his career by assisting Karan Johar in My Name is Khan and has also dabbled in modelling. “Every kind of experience comes handy in this industry, be it acting or assisting a director. Four years ago, I preferred assisting to being a model,” Siddharth says.
On rumours of signing his next film with Ekta Kapoor, Siddharth signs off with the typical, “Nothing is confirmed yet.”
Their role in Student of the Year
