{After Mohali momo incident} Food safety officials inspect eateries in Ludhiana dist

In the wake of Mohali momo incident and taking into account the well-being of the public, the local food safety officials conducted raids on various food eateries in the district on Wednesday

Meanwhile, raids were also carried out by the local health officials at a fast-food joint selling momos in Machhiwara, on Tuesday (File)

According to district health officer (DHO) Dr Amarjeet Kaur, the food and drug authority also directed them to increase vigil to ensure the food safety standard. “We were regularly conducting drives to inspect food items across the district. Now with the instructions from FDA we have stepped up our drives to nab those involved in adulteration of food items,” she said.

The department on Wednesday morning set up a checkpoint at Alamgir in Ludhiana-MalerKotla road, from 4-7am, to check the quality of milk being brought to the city.

According to DHO, 16 samples (1.25 liters for a single sample) were taken during the checking. “We have sent the samples to the laboratory for inspection. We are waiting for the report. We will take appropriate action based on the results,” she added.

During inspections on Wednesday, the officials raided a dairy in Haibowal and a fast food joint in Sarabha Nagar, based on complaints of adulteration and lack of hygeine. Three samples were taken, one of milk and two of vegetables from the food joint.

Meanwhile, raids were also carried out by the local health officials at a fast-food joint selling momos in Machhiwara, on Tuesday.

Senior medical officer of Machhiwara sub-divisional hospital, Dr Jasdev Singh, who carried out the raid, said, “I received a complaint from the president of Nagar municipal council alleging that a particular food joint was preparing food items in a very unhygienic condition. We raided the joint based on that.”

He informed that when the team reached the joint, they found that the complaints to be true.

“Food prepared in unhygienic conditions can cause gastroenteritis and food poisoning. We informed the joint owner that they should take care of hygiene as stipulated by the food safety act and warned them against violations,” said Dr Jasdev.
