Six arrested for robbery attempt at armyman’s house in Ludhiana’s Sunet village

A gang of miscreants, posing as employees of the municipal corporation, allegedly made a robbery attempt twice at the house of an Army officer in the city, police said on Friday.
The police swung into action after the officer, who is posted in Jammu and Kashmir, brought the matter to the knowledge of commissioner of police Mandeep Singh Sidhu. Earlier, the Sarabha Nagar police did not take any action despite repeated complaints filed by the family.
Police have arrested six accused, while six of their aides are yet to be arrested.
The arrested accused have been identified as Kamal Giri of Salem Tabri, his brother Rakesh Giri, Ravi Kumar of Jalandhar, Rahul Kumar, Neeraj Paras and Kaalo Devi in this case.
Their aides, including Gaggi, Rakesh, Paras Kumar, Karan of Moga, Rahul Kumar, are yet to be arrested. One of their accomplices is yet to be identified.
The FIR has been lodged on the complaint of Surinderpal Singh, 53, of Sunet village, who is an agriculturist. Surinderpal’s elder son is a captain in the Indian Army and is posted in Jammu. Their younger son is a doctor, who is pursuing an internship out of Ludhiana.
Surinderpal Singh said that on April 19, he was away from the house for work, while his wife Jaswinder Kaur was at home alone. At around 12:20 pm, his wife informed him that some men posing as employees of the municipal corporation were standing outside the house asking to open the main gate of the house. He asked his wife not to open the gate.
The accused started threatening her and demanded money. However, his wife locked the house from inside. After sometime, the accused left.
Surinderpal said that when he checked the CCTVs installed inside and outside the house, he found that the accused came there in an SUV.
The complainant said that he filed a complaint to the police on the same day, but the police did not take action. He investigated on his own and informed the police after identifying some of the accused on April 22, but the police were reluctant in taking action.
Further, he said that on April 25, two bike-borne men came to their house again and asked them to open the door. When refused, the accused threatened to scale the boundary wall of the house. He unleashed his pet dog on them and they fled.
“My son, who is a captain in the Army, wrote to the commissioner of Police Mandeep Singh Sidhu. After which I met him and narrated the whole incident. The commissioner of police marked an inquiry to joint commissioner of police Saumya Mishra. Later, on Thursday, the police lodged an FIR and arrested seven accused,” Surinderpal said.
Sub inspector Rashpal Singh, who is investigating the case, said that the accused wanted to rob the elderly couple and did recce of the house. A case under sections 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 384 (extortion), 506 (criminal intimidation), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC has been registered against the accused. The police are checking their past criminal record.
