Behbal Kalan firing: Alleging tardy probe, victims’ kin, Sikh bodies block Amritsar-Bathinda highway

Family members of 2015 Behbal Kalan police firing victims along with Sikh organisations on Sunday blocked the Bathinda-Amritsar national highway for indefinite period against the alleged tardy pace of investigation and delay in court proceedings in the sacrilege and police firing cases.
Two Sikh protesters — Gurjeet Singh of Sarawan village and Krishan Bhagwan Singh of Niamiwala village in Faridkot district — were killed on October 14, 2015, when they along with others, were protesting against a series of sacrilege incidents in Bargari and Burj Jawahar Singh Wala.
The protesters accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of not fulfilling the promise to bring the perpetrators of the police firing to book within the given deadline.
More 400 days after starting an indefinite “Beadbi Insaaf Morcha” at the site of the police firing incident, the protesters again blocked the highway (NH 54) by installing tents and starting an ‘akhand path’ on Sunday. The national highway was completely blocked at noon and the protesters were still staying put till filing of the news report.
Despite attempts by the district administration, the protesters refused to lift the blockade. However, no leader of AAP visited the protest site. Following the blockade, police diverted the traffic from Bajakhana via Jaitu city to Kotkapura.
The commuters faced difficulty due to the heavy traffic movement on congested lanes of Jaitu town.
Beadbi Insaaf Morcha had announced to block the NH-54 from February 4 giving to the state government deadline until then to bring these cases to a logical conclusion.
Krishan Bhagwan’s son Sukhraj Singh is on sit-in protest for justice from past more than 400 days at Behbal Kalan bus stop. He had started the “Behbal Insaaf Morcha” on December 16, 2021. “No one from the government has come to meet us, only the district administration officials had made requests on personal level. The ‘Beadbi Insaf Morcha’ will continue on Behbal Kalan incident site and we will not lift the blockade until a deadline is not announced by the government,” Sukhraj said.
