Chandigarh: Man caught for robbing vendor at knifepoint

The accused, Deepak alias Lalla, had robbed a vegetable vendor of his silver chain, some cash and documents, including Aadhaar card. Cops have recovered the stolen Aadhaar card, the motorcycle used in the crime, and a kamanidar knife from the accused.

Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a 26-year-old repeat offender within 48 hours of a knifepoint robbery in Ram Darbar.

The accused, Deepak alias Lalla, had robbed a vegetable vendor of his silver chain, some cash and documents, including Aadhaar card. Cops have recovered the stolen Aadhaar card, the motorcycle used in the crime, and a kamanidar knife from the accused.

Complainant Mahendra Raj, 38, a vegetable vendor residing in Phase 2, Ram Darbar, had told police that on March 29, around 11.15 am, he was selling vegetables when a youth wearing a helmet approached him, blocked his way and threatened him with a knife. “The accused snatched my silver chain, took 200-300 from my pocket along with my Aadhaar card, and fled after threatening to kill me if I returned,” the complainant told police.

The accused was produced before a local court, which granted one-day police remand for further questioning. Police said Deepak has a criminal history with at least four previous cases registered against him, including robbery and even a murder case registered in 2019 at Mauli Jagran police station.
