There were around two dozen students travelling in the van. They were on their way from Dalhousie to Bakloh cantonment area to participate in a summer adventure camp.

Locals rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation while teams of emergency workers reached the site.

The injured children were taken to the army hospital for treatment, while others were safe.

Dalhousie deputy superintendent of police Vishal Verma said prima facie, it appeared that brakes failure caused the driver to lose control on the wheel.

The driver tried to control the bus and, in the attempt, crashed the vehicle into the hillside after which it rolled over on its side. The accident also resulted in a traffic jam on the Pathankot-Chamba highway.

The cop said investigation has been launched to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
