J&K: Policeman arrested for killing pregnant wife in Kathua

A special police officer (SPO), who allegedly bludgeoned his pregnant wife to death in Billawar of Kathua district on Tuesday, was arrested on Wednesday, said officials.

SPO Mohan Lal, posted at district police lines in Kathua and a resident of Dharalta in Billawar, was evading arrest after he allegedly bludgeoned his pregnant wife Asha Sharma, 27, to death on Tuesday.

Following the murder, protests had broken out in the area and protesters had set the house of the accused on fire.

Kathua SSP RC Kotwal said, “The SPO has been arrested. Prima facie, it appeared that there was a dispute between them for last two to three years. They were married for the past seven to eight years and had an elder daughter aged six. The motive is still not clear if the attack was a sudden provocation or where there other reasons. It will be clear after investigations.”
