At least four persons were injured in the assault. Three assailants – Sukhdev Singh, Naginder Singh and Gurpawandeep Singh – were arrested, while ACP Randhir Singh, who was present at the spot in his duty vehicle, fled. Two cars, a JCB machine, and sharp-edged weapons were recovered from their possession.

The complainant, Balwinder Singh of Mangat village, said at least 40 people had attacked him, his uncle, aunt and cousin. “We informed the police, who arrested three people from the spot, while the others managed to flee. The ACP wanted to grab the 600 square-yard plot for a long time. The case is already in court. In December, the ACP had lodged a case against us for stealing bricks.”

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Sukhwinder Singh, who is investigating the case, said an FIR had been registered under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 447 (criminal trespass), 506 (criminal intimidation), 148 (rioting) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence) of the Indian Penal Code has been lodged against the accused.

A hunt is on for the arrest of the rest of the accused.
