The fire department received a call around 10am reporting flames at Rajindra Dyeing, following which six fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Factory workers had already attempted to douse the flames with extinguishers when the fire teams arrived. The fire teams managed to douse the blaze in around two hours.
Officials said garment material ignites easily and continues to burn from within even after surface flames are controlled. “Such stock needs deep cooling, otherwise it can catch fire again,” the fire officers said.
A fireman Rajinder Singh said the fire was confined to the first floor, saving the ground floor from damage. He also pointed out that the unit lacked adequate fire-safety arrangements for its size. “We noticed some used extinguishers, but the water supply was not up to the mark,” he said.
