The incident took place when the students were trying to move towards the office of dean student welfare (DSW). They were stopped by the police, resulting in a minor scuffle.

The protesters, associated with Punjab Students Union (PSU-Lalkaar), organised the protest at the Students Centre of the university and raised slogans at the varsity administration, alleging that the varsity has allocated fewer hostel seats to various departments.

The students also demanded that varsity should expedite the clearance of hostel waiting lists in the departments.

Later, a meeting was held between student representatives and varsity officials, including DSW and associate DSW.

The students, in a statement, said that they have been asked to submit the details of departments where fewer seats have been allotted which will be reviewed by the university.

They also said that authorities agreed to their other demands, including no timing restrictions on girls’ hostels.

“We will see that the accepted demands are implemented soon. And if the process of allotment of hostel seats is not conducted fairly then we will mobilise a large section of students and intensify the struggle,” PSU (Lalkaar)’s leader Amandeep said.

PU’s dean students welfare (DSW) was not available for comments.
