Mohali: Man who snatched ₹12,000 jailed for five years, fined ₹10,000
Pronouncing the sentence, the court of session judge Harpal Singh also ordered that the accused will have to serve another six months in prison if the fine is not paid
An Uttar Pradesh native, who had snatched a bag containing ₹12,000 in drunken stupor in June 2022, will cool his heels in jail for five years and also pay ₹10,000 as fine.
Pronouncing the sentence, the court of session judge Harpal Singh also ordered that the accused will have to serve another six months in prison if the fine is not paid.
The accused, Dilshad, hails from Rahatpur district in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, and was living in Sector 56, Chandigarh, when he was arrested.
As per case files, the snatching victim, Vipin Kumar, a resident of Sector 55, Chandigarh, had complained to the police that he used to work at a scrap shop in Daun village, where Dilshad often used sell his articles.
According to Kumar, on June 2, 2022, he was standing outside the scrap shop holding a bag containing ₹12,000 around 2 pm.
Meanwhile, Dilshad arrived at the shop in an inebriated state and after talking to him for sometime, snatched his bag and fled.
A chase ensued, but Dilshad managed to make good his escape. After he reported the matter, police had arrested Dilshad from the nearby Bahlolpur village.
As per police, the accused had hidden the bag containing the money in roadside bushes. When police recovered the bag, it contained only ₹7,000, while Dilshad had spent the rest on purchasing drugs.
Subsequently, a case under Sections 379-B (snatching after preparation made for causing death, hurt or restraint in order to the committing of snatching) and 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against Dilshad at the Balongi police station.

According to police, the accused, Ajay, 20, had snatched the mobile phone of Ravi Shankar near the Sector 47-C park on April 4, 2021, while the victim was talking on the phone.
The accused, who was riding a motorcycle, had driven past Ravi’s bicycle and snatched his phone, before fleeing.
The accused was arrested on April 23, 2021. He claimed he was being falsely implicated and opted for trial. The prosecution examined seven witnesses, including the complainant, to establish the guilt of the accused.
While he was chargesheeted under Sections 379-A (snatching) and 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code, the court observed that the prosecution was able to prove only the charge under Section 411, as the stolen phone was recovered from the accused, and convicted him.
