Plastic surgery, neurology, gastrology services restarted at Chandigarh’s GMCH-32
In the absence of adequate staff at Chandigarh’s GMCH-32, the plastic surgery and neurology services had remained halted for eight months, while gastrology services were unavailable for more than a year
OPDs services for plastic surgery, neurology and gastrology specialties have resumed at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, following the recruitment of new assistant professors in the respective departments.
The specialist doctors had joined in December 2022. Since then, Dr Samik Sharma, a plastic surgeon, said he had completed over 150 surgeries, including trauma, burn, congenital anomalies, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries, and treated over 75 burn patients.
Dr Ishreeen Ahuja, MD, neurology, said neurology OPD was available on Monday and Thursday. The OPD is attending to around 150 neurology patients a day, including those suffering from stroke, dementia, movement disorders, demyelinating and neuromuscular disorders. “We have recently started giving botulinum toxin (botox) to patients with focal dystonia,” he added.
He further said the neurophysiology lab was also fully functional and services were being provided to patients from tricity and neighbouring states.
With the joining of Dr Gautam Vinay Kumar, the gastrology OPD has also restarted on Wednesday and Saturday.
In the past three months, 153 upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, 55 lower gastrointestinal endoscopy (LGIE), 32 endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and 27 endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) procedures have been done. These cases were earlier referred to PGIMER due to unavailability of a gastroenterologist.
