Police have registered a rape case against an unidentified man after a 17-year-old girl gave birth to a girl child in Kumbra village on Sunday morning.

Police said the childbirth came to fore after villagers alerted them that someone in the community tried to bury the newborn to avoid social embarrassment for the girl’s family.

DSP Harsimran Singh Bal said the victim was four months pregnant when she arrived in the city from Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh (UP), five months ago. He said the girl’s father revealed that he had 10 daughters, including the 17-year-old.

Police lodged a zero FIR under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against the unidentified accused and transferred the case to Sitapur police.

Phase 8 SHO Himmat Singh said the UP Police had been intimated about the incident.
