Tikait seeks ₹600 for cane state advised price in Haryana

Farmer leader and Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) spokesperson Rakesh Tikait said that the benefits of the increased sugar prices should be shared with the sugarcane growers of the country, demanding the Haryana government to increase the state advised price (SAP) for sugarcane to be ₹600 for a quintal.

The mahapanchayat, organised by the BKU at Chhotu Ram Dharamshala on Gohana Road, was attended by farmers from several districts of Haryana. Tikait raised issues concerning remunerative crop prices, sugar mill capacity, delayed payments and government policies affecting farmers.

Tikait said the sugarcane grower is also a consumer of sugar and should not be denied the benefit of rising retail prices. If farmers receive a remunerative price for their crop, he said, they would be encouraged to expand sugarcane cultivation.

He also highlighted the need to increase the crushing capacity of sugar mills in the state, saying the existing capacity was inadequate compared with the state’s sugarcane production. Farmers are often forced to wait for long periods to sell their crop, he said.
