UT seeks new deadline to meet solar power generation target

With the UT administration achieving only 56 MWp solar power generation till date, the deadline of August 15 for the set target of 75 MWp is expected to be missed, say officials.

In a meeting of the governing body of Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST), the executing agency for the implementation of renewable energy projects in the city, officials said that the city will not be able to achieve the target by Independence Day and sought extension of the deadline to December.
An official privy to the developments said that a target of 100 MWp was set to be achieved by 2025. “A roadmap will be prepared and a consultant will also be hired to achieve the target of 100% shift to solar power by 2030,” the official added.
The official further said that to enhance solar energy’s share, administration is identifying every opportunity to minimise dependence on non-renewable energy sources.
Solar power projects of 10 MWp capacity, including two floating solar power plants to be set up on water works in Sector 39, were approved during the meeting.
Another 1 MWp solar plant was approved for a parking shed near DT Mall, IT Park.
The official added that CREST plans to set up a 4 MWp solar power plant on Patiala ki Rao, near Botanical Garden in Sarangpur, and a 2 MWp power plant on rivulet opposite to the dumping ground at Dadu Majra.
“Another 2 MWp solar power plant will be set on N-Choe near Garden of Conifers, Sector 52, and a plant of 500 kMp will come up near Sport Complex, Sector 42,” they added.
