YPS Chowk blockade: Won’t budge till Sikh prisoners are freed, says Qaumi Insaaf Morcha
The morcha, accompanied by farm unions, had laid siege to the major traffic lifeline on January 7, demanding release of Sikh prisoners lodged in different jails despite completion of their jail sentences
A day after the Punjab and Haryana high court expressed concern over frequent road blockades by protesters and stated that obstructing roads was not a solution, the office-bearers of Qaumi Insaaf Morcha (QIM) said the protest at YPS Chowk in Mohali will continue till the Sikh prisoners were freed from jails.
The morcha, accompanied by farm unions, had laid siege to the major traffic lifeline on January 7, demanding release of Sikh prisoners lodged in different jails despite completion of their jail sentences.
The protesters have also sought registration of a murder case against the officials and politicians allegedly responsible for the police action on Sikh protesters at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan.
Gursher Singh, who is providing legal counsel to the morcha, said the protest was peaceful and will continue until Sikh prisoners were freed from jail.
Morcha not behind Sohana Chowk protest
Gursher maintained that the protest at Sohana Chowk was not backed by the morcha.
“Even a group supporting Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh had returned from the protest site on Monday evening after the management of Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan at Sohana had requested that the langar being prepared for devotees was getting wasted due to the blockade,” said Gursher.
Balwinder Singh, office-bearer of Lok Adhikar Lehar, that is supporting the morcha, also appreciated the police action against Amritpal, saying police had been professional so far.
