Delhi woman falls out of rashly driven Uber as change in drop location irks driver

Police said that after the woman fell out, Pawan drove away with her hang bag containing her phone, wallet, and cash, apart from other things

A 22-year-old woman was injured on Wednesday when she fell out of an Uber cab in transit because the driver was angry about a change in the drop location, the Delhi police said on Friday.

According to the police, the driver, identified as Pawan, started driving the cab rashly. Police said that after the woman fell out, Pawan drove away with her hang bag containing her phone, wallet, and cash, apart from other things.

Police said that the woman, a resident of Delhi’s Dilshad Garden and an MBA student, hired the cab from Majnu Ka Tilla. She told the police that when she booked the cab, she put the destination as Ashok Vihar, but later decided to return home to Dilshad Garden and changed the drop location accordingly. The driver demanded extra money for the change in destination, police said, adding that he started driving rashly after unlocking the car, causing her to fall.

At the woman’s complaint, the Civil Lines police registered a case of rash driving and theft. “The driver has been arrested and the woman’s belongings recovered from him,” said Sagar Singh Kalsi, deputy commissioner of police (north).

An Uber spokesperson said they were helping the police with their probe. “This is an unfortunate incident. Rash and unsafe driving violates our community guidelines which help maintain safety standards on our platform. We continue to extend all possible support to the law enforcement authorities and have removed the driver’s access to the Uber app.”
