This shelter houses destitute children aged 10-18 years, especially those with special needs.

Medical superintendent of Lok Bandhu Raj Narayan Hospital Dr AS Tripathi said, “The children started getting admitted on March 23. Even today we have had some admissions.”

He elaborated that all the children presented with similar symptoms and were being treated.

“Some of the children upon further investigation turned out to have kidney issues, and we referred them to government hospitals with stronger nephrology departments,” he said.

He added that five of the children have been treated and discharged, and 16 are still admitted at Lok Bandhu Hospital.

Dr AS Tripathi has said that the bodies of the two girls who passed away have been sent for postmortem, where perhaps further details will become clear.

Dr Tripathi also said two children had kidney complications and one of them was referred to Balrampur Hospital and the other to King George’s Medical University, which was confirmed by both hospital authorities.

Dr KK Singh, media head cell at KGMU said, “The 15-year-old boy’s kidney had grown to a size larger than normal. He is being treated and his condition has improved. He has been moved to the Gandhi ward for the rest of his recovery.”

Similar is the case with the other referred patient as of now, said Dr Sanjay Teotia, director of Balrampur Hospital.

District probation officer, Women and Child Development Department, Vikas Singh said, “Starting Sunday, the children started falling sick. We are planning to schedule routine medical check-ups for them all.”

The shelter home has a capacity of 150 children, and is currently almost full, he added. The Nirvan Bal Griha is run on PPP (public private partnership) model with the state government at Para.
