As part of the drive, these vacant posts in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run schools will now be filled with the surplus teachers on a temporary basis.

There are currently around 750 vacancies in the civic body-run schools. At the same time, there is a surplus of 555 teachers in private aided secondary schools in the city. These teachers were temporarily accommodated by the education department in night schools as well as in other government offices.

According to an order issued by the BMC education department on Tuesday, confirming the adjustment of the surplus teachers from government schools into civic schools, teachers from a total of seven mediums, including Marathi, Hindi, Urdu and Gujarati, are included in the process. These include 145 teachers catering to classes I to V, 243 to classes VI to VIII, and 167 to classes IX and X.

The first batch of teachers were called at the head office of the BMC education department for the process as per their qualifications and experience.

The adjustment process has evoked mixed reactions. Jalinder Sarode, office-bearer of the Maharashtra Shikshak Bharti, said, “In a meeting with teachers’ association, deputy director of education and BMC education officer, education minister Deepak Kesarkar had ordered to re-appoint surplus teachers as per the requirement. Teachers are very fortunate to be re-appointed in their own city.”

While several teachers reached the head office of the BMC education department for the same, a set of them also held a protest against the process.

Opposing the decision, the Maharashtra Rajya Shikshak Parishad (MRSP) observed that Some of these teachers are teaching night school students and prelim examinations of classes 9 and 10 are yet to be conducted.

Shivnath Darade of MRSP said that the education department should not harm students by vacating all these classes.

In a letter written to the education minister on Wednesday, Darade said, “These appointments are not as per the rules. The BMC has over 100 teachers working in various government departments. The civic administration should first get these teachers back to schools and then appoint the surplus teachers.”
