Dumper runs over 68-year-old man in Chembur

The impact of the collision threw both off the two-wheeler, and they fell on the road. The dumper, however, was at such a high speed that it lost control and ran over Shetty’s head.

Mumbai: A speeding dumper while taking a U-turn in Chembur, ran over a 68-year-old man. The driver – Imran Sheikh – of the vehicle was arrested on Sunday morning.

The deceased, identified as Dayanand Shetty, was a plumber and used to stay with his family in Subhash Nagar, Chembur. The police said that the incident occurred at around 9.10 pm at the Chembur Naka junction on Saturday.

“Shetty and his friend Jairaj Gaikwad, also a plumber, had finished an assignment in the Subhash Nagar area and were on their way on Gaikwad’s scooter to the Amar Mahal junction for another assignment. Gaikwad was driving while Shetty was a pillion rider. As they were getting onto the Jain Mandir Road, a dumper while taking a U-turn gave a dash to them at high speed,” said an officer with the Mankhurd police station.

The impact of the collision threw both Gaikwad and Shetty off the two-wheeler, and they fell on the road. The dumper, however, was at such a high speed that it lost control and ran over Shetty’s head.

Passing motorists who witnessed the accident immediately stopped to help but by then, Shetty was bleeding from his head and was already unconscious. At the same time, a patrolling unit of the Mankhurd police station, which was passing by, saw the crowd and stopped to investigate.

“We rushed Shetty to the Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar, where he was declared dead before admission. Meanwhile, two of our personnel took the dumper driver to the police station,” the officer said.

After finishing the formalities at the hospital, Gaikwad went to the police station and recorded his statement, based on which the police registered an FIR. The cops have booked Sheikh, 42, for causing death and injury due to rash and negligent driving under the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. On Sunday, he was produced in court and was released on bail, said a police officer.
