MUMBAI: Popular singer Sonu Nigam’s father Agamkumar Nigam registered a complaint with Oshiwara police on Wednesday claiming that ₹72 lakh was missing from his home. Based on circumstantial evidence, the police have booked a former driver of senior Nigam for the crime.
Agamkumar (76), a resident of Windsor Grand building in Oshiwara, told police that his home was broken into between March 19 and 20 and the money in two separate lockers in the house was missing. Sonu’s younger sister, Nikita, registered the complaint on behalf of her father on Wednesday.
The complaint mentioned that Agamkumar had left his house on both Sunday and Monday. On Sunday afternoon, he went to Nikita’s place in Versova for lunch while on Monday, he visited Sonu’s home at 7 Bungalows.
“On Monday evening, he called and said that the money in the lockers at the house was no longer there. One locker had ₹40 lakh and the other had ₹32 lakh. The lockers were not damaged,” said the complainant.
The next day, Nikita and her father checked the CCTV footage of his building in which they spotted his former driver Rehan on both the days that Agamkumar had stepped out.
“Rehan had been working as a driver for Agamkumar for eight months until recently. In this capacity, he was in possession of a set of duplicate keys of the house. He was removed from the job as the employers were not happy with his performance,” said an official from Oshiwara police station.
The police officer said that when examining the footage provided by the complainant, they saw that Rehan was also carrying bags with him when exiting the building of his former employer. Based on these facts, Rehan was booked under sections 380 (theft), 454 (trespassing) and 457 (housebreaking), said the official. The police are on the lookout for the accused even as they are conducting further investigation in the matter.
