Infant flung from moving cab, case transferred to crime branch

Mumbai The probe into the case where a 21-year-old mother was molested and her 10-month-old baby died after she was flung from a moving cab by the passengers on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway near Virar, has been transferred to the crime branch by the Vasai-Virar commissioner Sadanand Date on Sunday.

The Mandvi police arrested the taxi driver, identified as Vijay Kushwaha, on Saturday and produced before the court on Sunday where he was remanded to police custody. According to police officers, the crime branch will now investigate the exact sequence of the incident and trace the three passengers who were sitting on the rear seat of the taxi (Eco van) GJ 15 CJ 1137.

According to the statement of the woman, she had been molested by the three men sitting on the rear seat and when she resisted, they snatched her daughter and flung her out of the cab. The woman said that she then opened the door and jumped off the moving cab to save her daughter. A traffic police officer rushed to her aid.

The woman, who received minor injuries said in her statement to the police, that as she, along with her daughter, were travelling towards Mastan Naka in Manor to her house from Nalasopara in the cab from Chinchoti in Naigaon heading towards Wapi in Gujarat at 11 am on Saturday. The woman was seated in the front seat next to the driver.

“She told us that the men began touching her inappropriately. When she resisted and tried to stop the van, the men grabbed her daughter who was in her lap, and flung her,” said the officer.

“I opened the door and without thinking jumped to save my daughter however after that I do not recollect anything. I just remember that a traffic police officer picked me up and rushed us to the Sanskruti hospital,” said the woman.

The woman and the baby were then taken to the Platinum hospital in Virar where the baby was declared dead.
