Suspect ex-driver detained by police for stealing from Sonu Nigam’s father

Mumbai: The Oshiwara police on Thursday detained for questioning the former driver of Agamkumar Nigam, singer Sonu Nigam’s father, as he had emerged as the prime suspect in the theft of ₹72 lakh from his former employers’ house.

“As he was in service of the aged man, he was given a set of keys to the apartment. He would also help around in the house or to bring the essentials or groceries as per the need. Therefore, it made sense to the children of Agamkumar that the driver had the keys,” said an officer from Oshiwara police. (HT PHOTO)

The driver had worked for Agamkumar for around eight months and was fired recently. Police said they are investigating the circumstances under which the driver was sacked and whether he harboured any ill will towards the Nigams and therefore he was brought for questioning.

The singer’s sister has lodged a police complaint on Wednesday on behalf of her father claiming that ₹72 lakh in cash had gone missing from their home between Sunday and Monday.

The complaint mentioned that Agamkumar had left his house on both Sunday and Monday. On Sunday afternoon, he went to Nikita’s place in Versova for lunch while on Monday, he visited Sonu’s home at 7 Bungalows.

“On Monday evening, he called me and told me that the money in the lockers at the house was no longer there. One locker had ₹40 lakh and the other had ₹32 lakh. The lockers were not found damaged,” said the complainant.

The complainant had also submitted a CCTV footage to the police that showed the suspect exiting from the building where Nigam senior lived with some bags in hand.

Senior officials in the west region confirmed that the driver, who had recently been fired from his job, had been picked up from his residence for questioning.

In the FIR, the complainant had mentioned that the driver, Rehan, had worked for the elderly man for around eight months before being fired.
