MUMBAI: A young couple and their three-month-old son were run over by an express train while they were crossing the railway tracks in Virar late on Thursday night.

Sachin Ingavale, senior police inspector, Government Railway Police (GRP) Vasai, said that the deceased were identified as Ajit Kumar Patel, 24, his wife Sita, 22 and their three-month-old son Aaryan.
The officer said the GRP station received a call from the Virar station master after which a team was rushed to the spot. “We found luggage spread near the bodies and on further checking, we found railway tickets, which indicated that Patel and his family were returning from Surat,” Ingavale said.
The officer said the couple, who stayed in Vasai and worked as daily wage labourers, had gone to visit their native place in Gujarat.
The couple got down just before the Virar station when the train slowed down at around 12.05am. “They wanted to board the last local train from Virar towards Churchgate to get off at Vasai. However, to get to the local train, they chose to cross the railway tracks,” the GRP officer said.
Ingavale said as they were crossing the tracks during the night, they did not realise that a train was approaching them and were hit by the speeding long-distance train. “Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem. We have registered an accidental death report (ADR),” he added.
