Noida twin tower demolition: Explosives loaded, structures to come down in 12 secs

Noida Authority CEO Ritu Maheshwari said the demolition will generate around 80,000 tonnes of C&G waste, of which, 50,000-55,000 will be used at the site for filling purposes. The remaining waste will be sent to the C&G plant for processing.

Explosives that will cause the blast and the demolition of the Supertech twin towers in Uttar Pradesh's Noida Sector 93A were planted at the site on Thursday. All preparations as per the evacuation plan finalised by the Noida Authority last week have also been made, CEO Ritu Maheshwari told reporters.

“Today the final spot visit and meeting with the stakeholders was done. Explosives loaded on both towers,” she said.

Maheshwari said the blast will take place at 2.30pm as scheduled earlier, and the demolition will occur between 10 and 12 seconds. She added that around 80,000 tonnes of C&G waste will be generated following the demolition, of which, nearly 50,000-55,000 will be used at the site itself for filing purposes.

“The remaining will be sent to the C&G plant for processing,” she added.

Reiterating the authority's plan of evacuating people living in two nearby housing societies, Maheshwari said that there are around 1,400 flats at the venues with at least 7,000 residents and staff residing in it. These people will be evacuated by 7am on the day of demolition, and will only be given green signal to return once officials check the site and feel that it's safe. According to the authority's evacuation plan, residents of the two nearby societies will likely be called back at 4pm.

Besides, up to 500 metres near the twin towers have been included in the “exclusion zone” which means it will remain closed to the public. Traffic movement on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, which is close to the two structures, will also not be allowed from 2pm to 3pm.

Maheshwari said that emergency vehicles, ambulances and fire engines will be parked nearby.

When asked about smoke and dust in the area following the demolition, the Noida Authority CEO said that smoke guns, water tankers and mechanical sweeping machines are being installed to help in the process. She added that adequate people for the sanitisation purpose will also be deployed by the authority.

“There will definitely be an impact, but the authority has taken preparations to minimise the same. Furthermore, air quality monitoring will also be done, and the report of the area after the demolition will be shared with residents and other people who reside in the nearby societies and areas,” Maheshwari told reporters.

Meanwhile, community (stray) dogs residing in the area are being rescued by an NGO. One of the workers told ANI that the rescued animals will be kept at a shelter home of the NGO and will only be brought back and released after the demolition is over.

The Supreme Court ordered the demolition of Supertech's Apex and Ceyanne towers will happen at 2.30pm on Sunday, and it will be conducted by Edifice Engineering. The evacuation plan was chalked out last week after the Noida authority held a meeting in presence of members of the resident's group of the two adjoining housing societies - ATS Villages and Emerald Court - and representatives of Edifice. Officials from Noida Police and the fire department, among others, were also in attendance.
