Following an argument with his neighbour over buying clothes, a man set the house of his neighbour on fire in Kulesara village of Gautam Budh Nagar on Tuesday morning.

According to the police, the woman whose house burned down lives in the same village and sells clothes from her home as a business. Her parents live in Delhi. The suspect, 35-year-old Mukesh, who lives in the same village with his widowed mother, came into her house on Monday on the pretext of purchasing some clothes and an argument started between them. The woman then refused to sell clothes to him and asked him to leave.

Enraged, the man allegedly set the pile of clothes on fire and it spread rapidly to the rest of the house, police said. The woman, who had a narrow escape, later filed a police complaint and the man was arrested.

“The woman complained that she has noticed him staring at her earlier as well. Mukesh’s mother said her son has mental issues for which he is on regular medication. However, he has been arrested as of now, keeping public safety in mind,” said Satyaveer Parmar, police post incharge of Kulesara.

He added that while nobody was injured in the fire, most of the clothes were completely burnt. The suspect was produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial custody, pending his medical examination and psychological evaluation.

Vinod Kumar, SHO of Ecotech 3 police station, where the complaint has been registered, said Mukesh has been booked under sections 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance), 452 (House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 504 (intentional insult to provoke) of the Indian Penal Code.
