Ghaziabad: A 35-year-old man in his SUV was shot five times by an unidentified man outside a dhaba on the Delhi Meerut Road Thursday night, and in his zeal to survive, he drove alone about 18kms, in an injured condition, to a hospital in Ghaziabad to save himself, a police officer said on Friday.

Five bullets, including one in his jaw area, were removed from his body. He is under treatment, the officer said.

Police identified the injured man as Rahul Chaudhary, a resident of Raj Nagar Extension and a property dealer.

The officer said Chaudhary had come to a dhaba around to 8.30pm to collect 75,000 from a group of people in Modinagar. “After collecting the money, Chaudhary returned to his car and turned on the ignition when an unidentified man fired several shots at him and fled. Sustaining the gunshots, Chaudhary sped away in his SUV, driving alone on the expressway and reached a multi-speciality hospital in Sanjay Nagar,” Bhaskar Verma, ACP of the Modinagar circle, told HT, adding that the hospital authorities informed the police about the admission.

“Five bullets, including one in his jaw area, were removed from his body. He is under treatment,” the officer said.

Following the incident, Chaudhary’s wife submitted a written complaint, on the basis of which an FIR was registered under BNS section 109(1) (attempt to murder) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) at Modinagar police station.

Police said that the unidentified shooter was waiting on a bike parked at some distance. The CCTV footage of the shootout was circulating on social media.

The ACP said search operations are underway to trace the suspects.

According to police, Chaudhary is a history-sheeter with several cases registered against him in the Modinagar police station.

“It is suspected that his rivals planned or carried out the shootout,” the ACP added.
