One dead, 27 injured as bus with 60 passengers falls off road in Greater Noida

Police said the deceased man has been identified as Guddu (26), who was from Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh

One man was killed and 27 people injured when a bus ferrying around 60 passengers rammed into a container truck, which braked suddenly, on Yamuna Expressway Tuesday morning.

Police said the incident took place near Galgotias University around 7am when the bus, which had started from Chhatarpur district in Madhya Pradesh, was travelling from Agra to Noida on the Yamuna Expressway.

“Due to dense fog, the bus driver also applied the brakes suddenly and lost control of the vehicle. The bus hit the railing of the expressway and fell off the road. There were at least 60 passengers in the bus of whom 27 sustained injuries. After being alerted by passersby, police teams immediately rushed to the spot, rescued the injured and took them to the hospital,” said Abhishek Verma, deputy commissioner of police, Greater Noida.

Police identified the deceased man as Guddu (26) from Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh.

“Twenty-seven people were admitted to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) hospital in Kasna, Greater Noida, while two were taken to Kailash hospital in Greater Noida. The impact of the crash was such that the front end of the bus had been ripped out,” Verma said.

“Of the 27 people who sustained injuries, two are children. All of them were given immediate emergency care and kept under observation after through medical examination. Five patients had factures and three patients with head trauma are admitted in the intensive care unit under observation. Others suffered blunt force trauma and are in the general emergency ward,” said Dr (Brig) RK Gupta, director GIMS.

Police said the driver of the container truck is under custody but no complaint has been received in the matter yet.

“If a complaint is submitted, a First Information Report will be registered and action will be taken against the driver,” said Verma.

In a separate incident, a truck loaded with lentil hit the divider of the highway and turned turtle in Dadri in Greater Noida, police said. The passengers are safe and the vehicle was removed from the highway to ensure traffic is not disrupted, police said.

The incident comes a day after two cars had a head-on collision on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Dadri at 9am on Monday morning. The drivers of both the cars sustained minor injuries, said police.
