An Audi SUV allegedly ran over and injured a 23-year-old security guard at a residential society in Vasundhara’s Sector 10 in Ghaziabad on Sunday evening, the police said on Tuesday, adding that the incident came to the fore on Tuesday after two videos of the incident were widely shared on social media.

The police have registered an FIR against the car driver on a complaint given by the security guard on Tuesday evening.

Narrating the sequence of events that ended in the SUV running over the guard, the police said there was an altercation between two families after a 32-year-old woman alleged dowry harassment and violence against her by her in-laws and her husband. The police said her sister and brother-in-law came to take her along with them on Sunday evening. The woman’s in-laws, wielding sticks, attacked their vehicle and it was while leaving in a hurry that their vehicle ran over the security guard at the gates of the housing society, police said.

At least two videos of the incident surfaced on Tuesday.

The first video purportedly shows the family in the car and the vehicle being allegedly attacked by persons wielding sticks, who are believed to be the woman’s in-laws. The second video shows the car driver speeding in order to escape the mob and running over the guard in the process.

The guard was identified as Satyam Jha who is presently undergoing treatment at a private hospital and has suffered severe injuries to his abdomen, hands and legs.

“The two families had a fight on Sunday evening and a woman came to me and told me that some people had come from outside to beat up her husband. So, we put up barricading to stop the car and told them that police will be called. The people in the car (relatives of the woman who alleged dowry harassment) did not stop and overran my colleague. He came under the rear wheels,” said Shahid Ali, one of the guards at the society.

The officials of the Ghaziabad police said that they have registered two cases over the incident.

“The woman’s relatives had come to take her along with them and there was some altercation between the two families. The woman has lodged an FIR against her in-laws alleging dowry harassment and domestic violence on December 8. In connection with the video of the guard being overrun by the car, we have registered an FIR on a complaint given by the guard,” said Swatantra Singh, ACP (Indirapuram).

The police said the Audi car driver has been booked for rash and negligent driving causing grievous hurt under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code on Tuesday evening.
