Water meters to be installed in all households in 2023: Noida authority
This is phase two of the authority’s project to calculate water charges on the basis of consumption instead of plot size. The authority believes this will help curb water wastage and also increase its revenue
The Noida authority said on Wednesday it will begin installing water meters in independent houses from Thursday as the first lot of 4,600 meters has reached the water department’s office in sector 5. The authority aims to install water meters in all consumer units such as households and commercial establishments in the city in 2023, said officials.
This marks phase two of the authority’s project to install water meters and calculate water charges on the basis of consumption instead of the size of a plot of land. The authority believes this will help curb water wastage and also increase its revenue.
“For phase two of the project, we have got 4,600 meters for independent houses and the work will begin on Thursday. We will install the meters in 4,600 houses in different sectors and then move on to other sectors,” said Avinash Tripathi, officer on special duty of the Noida authority.
“Once this work is complete, we will cover all individual and bulk consumers of all categories in 2023 and start collecting charges via meter readings,” he added.
Phase one of this project began in November 2022, when the authority started installing water meters for bulk consumers such as group housing. In phase one, the authority installed 290 water meters at the premises of bulk consumers and 450 water meters in independent houses in sectors 19, 26 and 27.
“Phase one will get completed in the next seven days with water meters to be installed in 100 other premises of bulk consumers,” Tripathi said.
Since the authority currently charges water bills on the basis of the size of the plot, consumers often waste water, said officials. The authority currently recovers ₹100 crore in water bills from all consumers.
