A 50-year-old woman tragically died in Manipur when she was hit by a stray bullet allegedly by unknown persons amid celebrations for Argentina’s win in the FIFA World Cup final, police officials said on Monday.

The incident took place when the family of the woman was also watching the match at the first floor of their house at Singjamei Wangma Bheigyabati Leikai Kongba road in Imphal east district around 11:50pm on Sunday, police said.
According to the woman’s husband, who runs a tyre workshop near his house, they heard the sound of fire crackers and also a gunshot-like sound amidst the celebrations of Argentina’s win over France.
Soon after, the woman was found in an unconscious state after she was hit by the bullet.
The body of the woman was sent to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal east district for autopsy.
Locals were protesting against the incident at Bheigyabati Leikai on Monday demanding a thorough probe.
Meanwhile, Manipur police registered a case in connection with the case and investigations are on.
“We’ve started an investigation into the incident,” a police official said.
