22-year-old woman dies by suicide after alleged dowry harassment
The deceased woman’s parents approached the Lonikand police station on Saturday and filed a complaint accusing her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment
A 22-year-old married woman died by suicide on Friday at her residence in the Lonikand area of Pune city, after alleged harassment by her husband and in-laws over repeated demands for money, police said on Sunday.
The deceased woman’s parents approached the Lonikand police station on Saturday and filed a complaint accusing her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment.
The accused have been identified as 28-year-old Yashwant Shivnath Late (husband), Sakhubai Shivnath Late (50), Shivnath Mahadev Late (55), and Suraj Shivnath Late, all from Gokulpark, Lonikand.
Somay Munde, deputy commissioner of police (Zone-7), said no arrest has been made so far.
According to Lonikand police, the woman allegedly faced mental harassment after her in-laws repeatedly demanded money from her parents following the marriage.
Sunita Rokade, senior inspector at Lonikand police station, said, “Based on the complaint, we registered a case against the husband and his family members under sections 108, 85, 80(2), 115(2), 352, 351(2), 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant sections.”
She added that statements from family members and other witnesses are being recorded as part of the probe.
