As summer approaches, all mango varieties are already available in local markets. The first mango of the season is traditionally consumed on Gudi Padwa as it coincides with the harvest season.

Haapus mangoes are currently priced between 900 and 1,000 per dozen in the retail market. However, traders predict that once the fruit’s peak season begins in April, the prices would come down.

“Mangoes have arrived in the market from all over the country, particularly from the Konkan region and Karnataka. Because the season has yet to begin, mango prices range from 1,200 to 5,000 per dozen “Yuvraj Kanchi, one of the market’s main traders, stated.

Citizens have begun purchasing mangoes in preparation for the Gudi Padwa festival, which also marks the start of the Hindu calendar’s new year.

“We purchased 1 dozen Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes for Wednesday’s celebrations at a cost of 1400 per dozen. This rate will almost certainly fall starting next month as mango supply increases,” Mahesh Shinde, a citizen, stated.

Normally, the mango season peaks in April and May, but because Gudi Padwa arrived early this year and climatic conditions have changed, this fruit is in short supply.

While Bappu Bhosale, president of the Market Yard traders and agents’ association said, “In the last two years there was less supply of mangoes to Pune as there were major losses to mango farmers in Konkan belt due to Covid and other climatic conditions. However, there has been good mango production this year, and we are hoping for a good mango season and profitable business this year.”
