South Africa vs England Highlights, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: SA hammer ENG by 7 wickets

South Africa vs England Highlights, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Heinrich Klaasen and Rassie van der Dussen hit half-centuries as South Africa registered a thumping seven-wicket win over struggling England to book a semi-final place at the Champions Trophy. Jofra Archer struck twice and got the better of South African openers Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton inside the powerplay, but Klaasen and Van der Dussen made it a cakewalk for the Proteas.

South Africa wrapped England's innings for 179 and booked the final spot in the semi-final as Afghanistan are eliminated from the race. Marco Jansen (3/39) took three wickets upfront to reduce England to 37 for three inside seven overs and they failed to stage recovery at any stage in the game.

Joe Root top-scored with 37 but several England batters including skipper Jos Buttler (21), Ben Duckett (24) and even Jofra Archer (25) failed to push on. Harry Brook also failed the spin test again and was dismissed by Keshav Maharaj for 19. Earlier, Marco Jansen ran riot and claimed three early wickets to put England on backfoot. Jos Buttler won the toss in his final match as captain, while a bug in the South Africa camp meant Temba Bavuma had to sit out, Aiden Markram standing in as captain. Phil Salt's poor run in ODI cricket continued, dismissed by Marco Jansen in the first over.

It is the penultimate group-stage match of the ICC Champions Trophy. Two teams with contrastingly different fortunes go head-to-head in what is more or less a formality of a game, but one that could have a significant impact on the rest of this tournament nonetheless. South Africa, who have all but qualified, are up against England, already subjected to two losses and eliminated from the tournament.

South Africa are tied on points with Afghanistan, but having thrashed them in the opening game of their campaign, are well clear on the NRR front. England would need to beat the Proteas by 207 runs, or chase down a small target at more than 10 runs per over. Afghanistan won’t be hoping for any favours from an English team who have looked lacklustre all tournament and well before, especially with Jos Buttler announcing that he will step down from captaincy. There isn’t a lot of spirit in this English camp, but every team wants something to show for their effort. Who knows, maybe all it requires is a win in this contest for England to find some sort of spark.

Meanwhile, South Africa will want top spot in this group, and will fight for that. They are the second-strongest team in the competition on balance of teams, and will want the group placement to warrant that kind of stature. They will also be hoping to avoid playing India in Dubai earlier than they have to, and while they will need to rely on results in Group A for that, there is no question that their strengths lie in playing on surfaces such as the one they will get in Karachi today, or in Lahore should they make that semifinal. So far in Karachi in this tournament, both matches have been won by teams scoring in the 310-320 range batting first, and might therefore not be a chasing pitch.

Of course, South Africa have also only played one match this tournament, and getting in more gametime will be crucial. They looked in solid form against Afghanistan, but will want their batting to play itself into form and for the bowlers to get more reps into playing in these subcontinental conditions. They will also be hoping that Heinrich Klaasen is fit to play, and in doing so gain a game-changing player who could be the difference between 350 and 400 if he can find his groove in the middle order.

For England, there isn’t anything other than pride to play for. They have looked toothless, error-prone, and without a clear idea of how to win ODI games. They have had a couple of terrific performances thanks to Ben Duckett and Joe Root’s fine centuries, but there are more questions than solutions present in this team. This match will be the last chance for a lot of these players — Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone prime amongst them — to stake a claim for the long-term future of this English ODI team, otherwise they will fall victim to the upcoming major reset that English cricket must take.

Highlights from the South Africa vs England ICC Champions Trophy match:

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Another one! Jansen on fire, Duckett departs

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: There's just no stopping Jansen at the moment, he's been slightly expensive but also threatening, making hay in Karachi.

Another one that slips slightly down leg, Duckett has been putting those away but is a bit early into this one and gets a leading edge. Loops kindly right back to Jansen, simplest of catches.

37/3 in 6.4 overs now, it's been all Jansen and England continue to have a torrid time. Duckett livid with himself.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Root survives close run-out call

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Nearly disaster for England as they get away with one there. Choose to run a risky third, and Root is struggling to get back. Ngidi didn't return to the stumps, so a lifeline for Root as Markram can't collect in time. Sloppy from both parties in this situation.

28/2 after 4, keeping the scoring up.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Marco Jansen with another! Near-copy of the first

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: There's the second one, and it's just like the first. Short ball to Jamie Smith which gets up high, and again it's sliced right into the air, with Markram completing the catch this time.

20/2 now in 3 overs.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Salt gone! Couple of boundaries, but bounced out

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: South Africa happy to let Phil Salt go after them, gambling on getting a chance early, and exactly what happens. A couple of streaky boundaries to get going for Salt, but one shot too many in the over. A last ball bouncer gets up to high, spliced straight up, and straightforward catch for Rassie van der Dussen.

9/1 after the first.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Buttler chooses to bat, Bavuma out through illness

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: So Bavuma and de Zorzi both out through illness, and the Proteas a little thin at the top which means Tristan Stubbs, who bats at 3 in the Test team, will open. Meanwhile, Buttler batting first. Sounded extremely solemn at the toss.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: South African coach Rob Walters on potentially playing India

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Walters was dismissive of any sort of disadvantage to playing India in Dubai down the line.

“I think if we spend our energy worrying about a disadvantage, we spend less energy thinking about ourselves and what we need to be doing. The scheduling is the scheduling. India obviously has been in Dubai at the same venue, in the same place, and other teams haven't. Whether that turns out to be an advantage or not will remain to be seen.”

“What I do know is that we have to concentrate on what we're doing. We have to concentrate on spending all our energy thinking about how we're going to get through our next step, which is England, and then wherever that takes us from there.”

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: What they said: Buttler on giving up captaincy

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Jos Buttler on announcing his resignation from captaincy and how he hopes to respond, if there is any relief:

“Maybe in time it will be. I think the driving emotions are still sadness and disappointment, but I'm sure in time that will pass and I can get back to really enjoying my cricket. I'll also be able to reflect on what an immense honour it is to captain your country and all the special things that come with that.”

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: 30 mins to the toss

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Toss approaches as the teams put the final finishing touches on their preparations. Thankfully, clear weather expected in Karachi, so we likely will see some cricket after a stop-start week.

If nothing else, fans will want a game as exciting as the one England provided last time out.

Mar 1, 2025, 13:20:33 IST

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Injury news: Klaasen fit, but Wood out

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: On the team selection front, the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen has been declared fit for this game, and will look to reprise his 109(67) at the Wankhede. Meanwhile, Mark Wood's injury sustained against Afghanistan means he is out of this tournament. Saqib Mahmood the player likely to replace him for England.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Who do England keep going into the future?

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: More than anything, this match perhaps serves as an opportunity to see which are the players that can continue for England in the future. Surely Duckett, Root, Rashid, and some younger players such as Brook. But what of the likes of Liam Livingstone and Phil Salt? This might be as close as it comes to judgement day in this format for them.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: IND, NZ, AUS watching with interest

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Three teams have already sealed their spots in the semifinals, and South Africa have done so in all but actuality. They could lose and still qualify in second, which makes tomorrow's India vs New Zealand game to keep an eye on as well. Those teams will know from today's result who the winner of that match will play, so repercussions not just for this group, but for Group A as well.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: What to expect in Karachi

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: In the two completed games at the National Stadium in Karachi so far, both teams have won while batting first. Runs have been slightly easier to come by batting in the first innings for both South Africa and New Zealand, and tougher for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

With an expected first innings score in excess of 310-320, that might be what the captains opt to do. England, however, have lost both while batting first and chasing this tournament. Can they find a strength?

Mar 1, 2025, 12:40:11 IST

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: … leading to a 229-run win

They then bowled out England for 170, achieving a 229-run monster victory. It could have been worse, too: England were 100-8 at one stage, Gerald Coetzee taking 3 wickets but all bowlers chipping in. Only a Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson counterpunch at the very end adding some sort of meagre respectability to the score.

If you can call a 229-run loss respectable.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Last time out: a Protean hammering…

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: The last time these two teams faced off in an ODI was in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where South Africa piled on a humongous 399 at the Wankhede thanks to a blitzkrieg at the death by Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen, putting on 150 runs in just about 12 overs.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: SA vs ENG head-to-head statistics

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Old enemies who have competed in cricket for over a century now, England and South Africa have a very tense and close rivalry in this format. South Africa have beaten England on 34 occasions, while England have beaten the Proteas 30 times. There have been 5 no-results and one tie.

At the Champions Trophy, in four matches, it is an even split of two wins each.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Can Jos Buttler sign off with a bang

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Jos Buttler announced that he will step down from white ball captaincy, succinctly stating he isn't sure if he is part of England's solution of the future, or just a problem in their present.

Buttler will also be aware of how his batting has suffered with the pressure of captaincy, and with some freedom and a nothing-to-lose frame of mind, we could see one of the most entertaining players of this generation really shine today.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: What change do SA make to accomodate Klaasen?

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: One question the Proteas will have to ask is what they will do to the batting order to accomodate Klaasen back in. Rickelton's century surely makes him a set pick, so does Tony de Zorzi sit out and allow Bavuma to come to open the batting? Worth keeping an eye on what decision is made.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Rabada vs Root the battle to watch

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: One of the world's best bowlers, against one of the world's best batters, and both leading their team in those respective departments. Root is in strong touch, having batted well both times for England, but Rabada is always up for the challenge and capable of creating havoc. Certainly the matchup to keep an eye on today.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: England fighting for pride

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: There will be many questions asked internally about the state of this England team. It's not that they've been very far off finding results in this tournament, but finding the extra inch to go on and win has been missing. They will want some optimism and positivity to take away from this tournament, and a win over one of the stronger teams in the tournament could do just that.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: South Africa aim for top spot

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Regardless, Temba Bavuma's team won't be too concerned by concern of getting knocked out of this tournament. They will play the same good smart cricket, and do start off in this match as favourites to go through top.

It will be as much about match practice as anything else, with their game against Australia being a washout.

Mar 1, 2025, 11:20:18 IST

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Afghanistan still mathematically capable of qualifying

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: It's an outside chance — and with the way England is playing, an extremely unlikely outside chance — but Afghanistan still technically are in the hunt.

They would need England to beat South Africa by 207 runs, or a by an equivalent heavy margin while chasing. Is that a bet you would take? You have to wonder what the Afghanistan camp is thinking after yesterday's washout.

South Africa vs England Live Score, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: After Australia vs Afghanistan rained out yesterday, the Group B table is more or less settled as well.

Australia qualify on 4 points, while England bring up the bottom on 0. In the middle, both South Africa and Afghanistan sit on 3 points, but with the Proteas on a significantly healthier NRR.
