Australia beat Bangladesh by 4 wickets

Commentary

11:34 AM IST One down, two to go - That brings us to the end of a rather one-sided contest, with Australia drawing first blood in the T20I series and now eyeing an unassailable lead in the next game. Bangladesh, meanwhile, will be desperate to bounce back and level the series. We will be back here in Chattogram for the second T20I on Friday, 19th June, which gets underway at 8 am GMT. As always, do join us early for all the build-up. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
11:31 AM IST The victorious skipper of Australia - Mitchell Marsh says that it's always nice to start the series with a win. On the spinners, he says that they were a bit surprised by the lack of pace and bounce on the wicket and feels that they picked a very well-rounded team. On Cooper Connolly, Marsh says that he's now got a good taste of international cricket and he'll continue to grow.
11:37 AM IST PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Adam Zampa wins the award for his excellent bowling spell of 3/18. On picking up 150 T20I wickets, Zampa says it feels good and is a proud achievement, especially after being around in the format for so long. He adds that, despite a tough ODI series, the young players like Nikhil Chaudhary and Joel Davies have settled into the side seamlessly. On the nature of the pitch and his plans, he says the information passed on to him suggested the pitch was a bit dull, with the ball not coming onto the bat easily. He adds that he simply tries to use those conditions to his advantage.
11:28 AM IST The captain of Bangladesh - Towhid Hridoy says that as a batting unit, they failed today, but will work on it and come back stronger. He further adds that they lost too many wickets in the middle overs. Hridoy reckons that the wicket was a good one to bat on and they should have got to about 160-170, but as a bowling unit, they have been doing well.
11:23 AM IST Presentation Time...
11:23 AM IST The fight was there, runs were not - Bangladesh were quite disciplined with the ball and, in fact, every bowler used apart from Saif Hassan managed to pick up a wicket, with debutant Abdul Saqlain getting a couple. The problem, though, was the total on the board, which simply left them with too much to do. The encouraging sign was the fight they showed, refusing to let Australia coast to victory and throwing everything into the contest in the field. Those are positives they can carry into the next game, but if they are to bounce back in the series, their batters will need to shoulder far more responsibility.
11:21 AM IST Spin chokes Bangladesh - Earlier in the game, Bangladesh were bundled out for a meagre total, with only Saif Hassan providing some early impetus and Mahedi Hasan adding a fighting 29 off 22 balls late in the innings. Apart from those two, no batter even crossed the 20-run mark, underlining just how disappointing the batting effort was. Australia executed the 'spin to win' formula to perfection, with nine of the ten wickets falling to the spinners. Adam Zampa and debutant Joel Davies shared six wickets between them, while Matthew Renshaw picked up a couple and Spencer Johnson and Nikhil Chaudhary chipped in with one apiece.
11:26 AM IST Aussies get the job done - Chasing a modest target, Australia suffered an early wobble as both openers departed inside the Powerplay. But Cooper Connolly carried his outstanding form from the ODI series into the shortest format, blasting a fluent 47 off just 27 balls. His brisk 40-run stand with Tim David all but knocked the wind out of Bangladesh's challenge. With Australia firmly in control, debutant Nikhil Chaudhary and Matthew Renshaw then guided the visitors closer to the target, but neither could stay till the end. That left Xavier Bartlett to walk out and apply the finishing touches, sealing the win with 10 balls to spare.
11:18 AM IST Australia strike first - Australia are up and running in the series, taking an early 1-0 lead and firmly seizing the momentum. After the disappointment of a 2-1 ODI series defeat, this victory should inject plenty of confidence into the visitors ahead of the remaining games. Bangladesh deserve credit for dragging the contest as deep as they possibly could, but with so few runs on the board, they were always up against it in this chase and remained second favourites from the outset.

OUT! CAUGHT! Matt Renshaw fails to finish things off for his side and his sluggish knock finally comes to an end. Abdul Saqlain serves it just back of a length and slants the ball into the pads. Renshaw gets cramped for room and just wrists it across into the leg side. He fails to keep it down and Saif Hassan at short mid-wicket springs to his left, taking a sharp low catch. Australia still need 3 for the win.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! The keeper seemed too excited with the caught behind appeal, and he's missed the stumping opportunity here. The umpire turns down the initial appeal but Parvez Hossain Emon seems certain and a review is taken. Nagging length, just sliding it down leg. Nikhil Chaudhary sits down and looks to play a fine paddle but misses and the keeper gobbles it up nicely to his left. The third umpire is called in and checks UltraEdge first, which confirms that the ball did brush the gloves. The umpire then also checks the legality of the catch and it is all fine.
