11:53 AM IST Right then, that’s all from this abandoned Sydney Derby. Unfortunately, the final league match for both teams couldn't reach a conclusion, resulting in the points being shared. This means the Sixers will finish the league stage in second place, while the Thunder secure third, regardless of the remaining three matches in the next two days. These positions are now locked in as the upcoming results won’t impact their standings. That also means that Hobart Hurricanes finish on top of the table and will host the Sydney Sixers for the Qualifier at the Ninja Stadium. As Sydney Thunder finish third, they will play the Knockout fixture at their home ground - Sydney Showground Stadium. Looking ahead to Saturday, 18th January, it’s a thrilling double-header! The Melbourne Renegades will face off against Brisbane Heat at Docklands, while the Perth Scorchers take on the Adelaide Strikers in Perth. The first game kicks off at 11.30 AM IST (6 AM GMT), but as always, we’ll be here earlier with all the build-up. Until then, stay safe, take care, and enjoy your day. ADIOS! CHEERS! SEE YOU AGAIN!
10:51 AM IST Coming back to the Sydney Smash now, and the inevitable has happened here. THE MATCH HAS BEEN CALLED OFF! Both sides will share the spoils. We could get only 5.1 overs of action where we watched some of the vintage David Warner shots, but that was all we got. The rain has won here at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which is a bit disappointing because we would have liked to see these two city rivals go hard at each other for the bragging rights.
10:55 AM IST UPDATE - 4.05 pm IST (10.35 am GMT) - Things are not looking promising here! However, we are still waiting for any official word. While we do that, let us move from Cricket to Tennis. The Australian Open is going on, and we have already seen one of the biggest upsets in the second round. 19-year-old Learner Tien has defeated former World No. 1 and 5th seed for this tournament, Daniil Medvedev. The teenager took the first two sets, but only to be pegged back in the next two, which took it to the decider. It went to a tiebreak where Tien held his nerves and got the job done, winning the biggest match of his career so far. What a moment for the young kid!
10:32 AM IST UPDATE - 3.46 pm IST (10.16 am GMT) - Well, the happiness was short-lived! The showers are back on in Sydney and so are the covers. There were some talks about a 9-over per-side game, but now that will not be the case, and the best possible chance here looks like a 5-over contest. The prospect of that also looks grim at the moment. While we wait for more news, let us hear what Chris Green of Sydney Thunder has to say. He says any form of game happening is great. Adds that the winner of this game has a guaranteed top-two spot. Mentions that they have already qualified, so it is an opportunity to be the top cherry on the pie. Further adds that it is great that the crowd has stuck around tonight. Says that the outdoor furniture was blown away because of the wind, hoping that the wind will also blow away the rain as well. Tells that there is a big game of cards happening inside the changing room, some people are counting Duckworth Lewis, and some guys are swapping stories and telling jokes. Adds that it is always hard to go past Warner who holds court everywhere he goes and Sam Konstas's effect is nice to see. Ends by saying that regardless of the result, they definitely will get one game at MCG and to play finals cricket will always be a huge thing.
10:03 AM IST UPDATE - 3.31 pm IST (10.01 am GMT) - Some positive signs! The live visuals show that the rain has stopped for now and the big covers are coming off. We hope that it stays like this and that the outfield gets ready quickly for a resumption here. Let's hope for the best.
9:52 AM IST Earlier today, Australia Women completed the whitewash over England Women in the ODI series and are currently leading 6-0 (Points) in the Women's Ashes. Batting first, the Aussies posted 308/8 courtesy of a smashing maiden ODI ton from Ash Gardner. Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath scored half-centuries while Georgia Wareham finished with a flurry, a fiery 38 off just 12 balls. In response, England Women were bundled out for 222 runs. A couple of fifties from Tamsin Beaumont and Nat-Sciver Brunt, but other than that, no one could really convert their starts, and they ended up losing by a big margin of 86 runs. Alana King starred with the ball again for the hosts with a magnificent five-wicket haul. Now, all the pressure is on England Women as they will need to win all three T20Is and the Test to win the Ashes.
9:29 AM IST UPDATE - 2.52 pm IST (9.22 am GMT) - For a brief moment, things were looking good. The ground staff were removing the big covers, but then it started to shower again and pretty heavily. Very frustrating for everyone, but it is not in anyone's hands. We already lost a couple of overs due to the first rain delay, and now if and when we get back on, we will be having a much shortened game. The waiting game continues...
9:53 AM IST Pat Cummins, Australian Men's Team (ODI and Test) Skipper is up for a quick chat down the side. He says that it has been an amazing BBL season so far where many matches have gone to last-ball thrillers. Adds that he is enjoying it very much and has watched from home. Mentions that the energy is different this season. Davey is playing amazingly and he is one of the leading performers and playing like that. Talks about his preparations and that he is willing to do brilliantly and when the conditions favour you as a bowler then you can do much good. Talks about his excitement as he can’t wait to play at Lords and playing in Sri Lanka and is very happy with the win over India in the recent series. Informs that fast bowlers like Starc are getting rested and they are trying to do some practice in the net session in Dubai for the preparations of the sub-continent pitches. Concludes that the crowd has been amazing and the fans have come in full support of both teams where we can see half of the fans in green and half in pink.
9:08 AM IST UPDATE - 2.37 pm IST (9.07 am GMT) - We have some bad news! It is now absolutely pelting down at the SCG and the weather forecast is not very promising either. We can only hope that it all clears up and we get some more action in the Sydney Derby. Fingers crossed!
9:00 AM IST Oh..no! The drizzle is back on in Sydney and the players are going off again. This is a bit heavier than the previous drizzle, as a few umbrellas go up in the crowd and the covers come on quickly. However, there is a strong wind blowing and we hope this is just a passing shower. Stick with us for more news.

OUT! BOWLED! Jack Edwards has his man now! First down for Sydney Thunder and Sam Konstas has to depart here after making just 9 runs. Bowled full, almost a yorker, around middle, with pace, coming in from over the wicket. Sam Konstas tries to bring the bat down in time but gets beaten on the outside edge as the ball has some pace and movement in the air. 8:56 AM IST We are all set for the Sydney Smash! It is pretty dark and overcast at the SCG, but the good thing is the rain is staying away for now. The Sydney Sixers players make their way out to the middle through the fireworks and smoke and spread out to take their respective field positions. The dynamic duo of Sam Konstas and David Warner are the two openers for Sydney Thunder. Jack Edwards has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

7:20 AM IST With the Sixers dominating recent encounters, having won the last four completed games, the Thunders will be eager to flip the script. Under the Sydney lights, this promises to be a thrilling encounter. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.
7:45 AM IST Speaking of the Sydney Thunder, their resurgence from a last-place finish last season has been remarkable. David Warner has led from the front with the bat, while young Sam Konstas will look to impress more in his last outing of the season before joining the Australian Test sqaud. With Sam Billings also in the mix, the Thunder’s batting boasts a solid core. The bowling department, spearheaded by Chris Green, has been equally impressive. Wes Agar replaces Liam Hatcher in the squad, and he along with Tom Andrews will play the supporting roles.
7:48 AM IST The Sydney Sixers, under the experienced leadership of Moises Henriques, have had a strong campaign with six wins in nine matches. Their star batter Steven Smith has been nothing short of sensational, delivering a masterclass with a century and a half-century in his two outings this season, but this will be his last outing for the Sixers this season. While Smith’s brilliance has been pivotal, contributions from Henriques and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe have also bolstered their performances. However, consistency from these key players will be crucial tonight. On the bowling front, Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis have been instrumental in dismantling opposition lineups, although Abbott just like Smith will going on national duty after this game. This dynamic duo will need to step up once again to counter the Thunder’s dangerous batting lineup.
7:15 AM IST Hello and welcome to the 37th match of the 2024/25 Big Bash League, where the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground sets the stage for the much-anticipated Sydney Derby. The Sixers and Thunder, two fierce rivals, face off in their final league game with a coveted top-two finish on the line. 7:15 AM IST ... MATCH DAY ...
6:58 AM IST The 37th match of the 2024/25 Big Bash League brings us the Sydney Smash between the Sixers and the Thunder at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground. Both sides have locked in a playoff spot, and this will be their last game of the league stage. The winner of this clash will secure a top-two finish, giving them a double chance in the playoffs where even if they lose in the Qualifier, they will get a second bite of the cherry in Challenger. The Sydney Sixers, led by Moises Henriques, have been in imperious form this season, boasting six wins from nine matches. Steven Smith has been their talisman, showcasing his class with a fifty and a century in the two games he has played so far this season. Henriques and Josh Philippe have chipped in with crucial contributions, but the Sixers will need consistency from them. Sean Abbott took a bit of tap in the last game and went wicketless, but overall he, alongside Ben Dwarshuis, has done the bulk of the damage. The duo will hold the key to keeping the Thunder’s in-form batters at bay. The Sydney Thunder, on the other hand, have had a remarkable turnaround from their bottom-place finish last season. Skipper David Warner has been a key figure with the bat for the Thunder. Sam Konstas scored a gritty half-century on a turning pitch, which was a big positive on the batting front for the Thunder in their last outing. Their bowling, led by Chris Green, has been impressive, with Wes Agar and Tom Andrews providing excellent support. If the experienced duo of Warner and Billings can fire, the Thunder might well upset the Sixers’ plans. As both teams gear up for their final league match, this match will be exciting to watch. The Sixers have dominated this rivalry, winning all the last four completed meetings. With a double chance in the playoffs on the line, expect nothing short of fireworks under the Sydney lights. Who are you rooting for?
