Young Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant on Sunday scripted a massive Indian record, breaking the legendary Kapil Dev's 40-year-old feat with his fiery half-century against Sri Lanka on day 2 of the pink-ball Test in Bengaluru.
Pant laced seven boundaries and 2 sixes to reach to the half-century mark in just 28 balls on the second morning of the second Test match of the series as he recorded the fastest half-century ever scored by an Indian batter in Test history.
Kapil Dev had scored a 30-ball 50 in the 1982 Test match against Pakistan in Karachi and is followed by Shardul Thakur, who had scored a 31-ball half-century in the Oval Test against England last summer, and former India cricketer Virender Sehwag, who had scored a 32-ball 50 against England in Chennai.
Overall, he stands joint-ninth in the elusive list alongside EAV Williams of West Indies, Ian Botham from England, West Indies' Chris Gayle and New Zealand's Colin de Grandhomme. Among Asian batters, he stands fifth after Misbah-ul-Haq (21 balls), Shahid Afridi (26), Mohammad Ashraful (26), and Yousuf Youhana (27).

Earlier in the day, Indian bowlers delivered only 35 deliveries on the second morning to bundle out Sri Lanka for just 109. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers with his sensational and record-equalling 5 for 24, which was also his maiden five-wicket haul for him at home.
India then added to their 143-run first innings lead to take the figure past 300 with Pant's knock playing an influential role along with captain Rohit Sharma's 46 off 79.
