India vs Australia 1st Test Highlights: Ashwin and Jadeja took the Australian batting lineup apart

India vs Australia 1st Test Highlights: Australia crumbled to Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, with Axar Patel and Mohammed Shami backing them up, collapsing to a score of 91. They were all out within a session for a score which is their second lowest Test cricket against India. Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 25 off 51 as his teammates fell at the other end. Ashwin ended the Australian second innings with figures of 5/37 while Jadeja took 2/34 to follow up on his 5/47 in the first. India were earlier all out for 400, taking a lead of 223 runs. Jadeja and Axar, whose partnership had blown the wind out of Australia's sails towards the end of the second day, could not add too much to their stand. However, the latter hung around while Mohammed Shami scored a quickfire 37 off 47 balls. Axar was the last Indian wicket to fall, having made 84 off 174 balls.

India vs Australia: Big appeal against Axar!

Sharp spin from Lyon for the third ball of the delivery, the ball goes past his outside edge and the wicketkeeper also takes off the bail. Umpire doesn't respond and Cummins takes the DRS but, as it turns out, the umpires themselves went upstairs to check for a stumping. In the end, there was clear gap between bat and ball and Axar had grounded his backfoot. Unclear if Australia keep their review or not.

India vs Australia: India 324/7, lead by 147

Two runs for Axar and one for Jadeja in that first over of the day by Cummins. Nathan Lyon is coming in from the other end, not Todd Murphy. This was the 115th over of the innings.

India vs Australia: Kapil talks about Kohli

Virat Kohli could only score 12 off 26 before falling off the very first ball of the second session. This just extended his poor recent form in Test cricket but former India captain Kapil Dev feels that Kohli can turn things around soon, just as he has done in recent months in limited overs. "I think he will make an impact, because he still has a lot of hunger left in him, which we all can see. The first match is very important. If he makes runs, then his playing style changes. When there is a bigger player the first Test match is always important. If he even makes 50, then I can predict that he will make 2-3 centuries in this series because both teams will get two chances. We need to keep that in mind," Kapil said on YouTube channel 'Uncut'.

India vs Australia: Australian squad on the ground

The entire Australian squad gathered in the middle, something that has not really happened often since Andrew McDonald took over. Australia have to do some serious catch up today, starting maybe a wicket or two in the very first over itself, if they want to avoid a big loss in this match at this point.

India vs Australia: Rohit Sharma joins a unique club

The century yesterday was Rohit's ninth of his Test career and his first as captain of the team. This made him just the fourth player to have scored a century in all three formats as captain of a side. The others are South Africa's Faf du Plessis, Sri Lanka's Tilakaratne Dilshan and current Pakistan skipper Babar Azam.

India vs Australia: Suryakumar Yadav's debut

Before he was known as a reincarnation of AB de Villiers in T20 Internationals, Suryakumar Yadav was known for being a dependable hand in Mumbai's middle order in domestic cricket. We saw a glimpse of that side of his game during his brief stay in the middle but the manner in which he was dismissed would be a disappointment for him. SKY, facing Nathan Lyon for the first time in his career, went for an expansive drive first ball and the delivery snuck into the kilometres of space he left between bat and pad and took his stumps. There were quite a few voices questioning SKY's selection ahead of the marauding Sarfaraz Khan and this showing would not help his case at all.

India vs Australia: What Axar said after his maiden Test half century

“Have been doing well with the bat for the last one year. That confidence is coming in handy. My technique - I always knew it was good. I work on it when I get a break. Work with the coaching staff. They tell me that I have the ability, so I try to contribute. When you go in to bat you find some difficulty (on that pitch), but it gets easier after spending some time. The talk with Jadeja was to not lose focus. Till the time we bat tomorrow the pitch will play well, and when we get the chance to bowl - we'll find help (laughs).”

India vs Australia: The legend of Jadeja

It would be hard to find a player more consistent than Ravindra Jadeja at the moment in all departments of the sport of cricket. His fielding standards have never fallen, he delivers with the ball in nearly all conditions and he is a hard, hard man to dismiss anywhere in the world. Jadeja ended big partnerships and fast tracked the collapse of Australia's bottom five on Day 1 and is now threatening to bat Australia into oblivion.

India vs Australia: What Murphy had to say

“Coming into the game, I was sort of hoping to get one wicket at least. To finish the day with five on debut is a special day. It's been a pretty surreal week, it's all happened quite fast. From the moment I found out I'll be playing until now, just tried to embrace it and enjoy everything that comes with it. I try to make sure that my body language is quite good and I believe in myself. The message I got from a lot of guys was don't change anything that I've been doing in state cricket. I looked at Jadeja, Ashwin and Axar, they were so consistent with what they were doing. They didn't go searching for too much. That was something I was looking at - putting enough balls in that area to ask questions for long enough. It's awesome to have them (family) here, I found out two nights before, it was mad rush for them. They had a 2 AM leave from home to get to the airport. they're really grateful that they had the opportunity to get in here.”

India vs Australia: Murphy (lays down the) Law

It is not often you see a player being fast tracked into the Test team in Australia and Murphy showed why it was him and not the more experienced Ashton Agar who was chosen as Nathan Lyon's spin partner. He was easily Australia's most dangerous bowler and ended the day with figures of 5/82 in 36 overs. The 22-year-old is only playing his eighth first class match and he has never bowled even close to the number of overs he has here in an innings before. This is also his first first class fifer overall.

India vs Australia: Day 3 looms ahead!

At the end of Day 2, Australia were in the phase where a number of visiting teams have been in recent Test matches - where they get the Indian batting lineup down to their last three or two wickets for a score that can't be considered too competitive before a partnership just sucks the life out of them. Normally, it is helmed by Rishabh Pant and then by Ravindra Jadeja, this time, it is between Jadeja and Axar Patel. Pretty much India's last recognised batting pair, the score was 240/7 when Axar joined Jadeja in the middle, their lead 63 runs. At Stumps, the pair took India's score to 321/7 and their lead on 144, which is a mountain on this pitch. Their partnership is on 81 off 185 balls, India's best of this innings.

India vs Australia: Rohit Sharma sets a new Indian record!

Rohit Sharma set a new Indian record on Day 2, by becoming the first captain from the country to slam a ton across all three formats in international cricket. The batter smacked 120 runs off 212 balls, packed with 15 fours and two sixes.

India vs Australia: Ravindra Jadeja breaks a huge Kapil Dev record!

Jadeja bagged a five-wicket haul on Day 1 and then followed it up with an unbeaten half-century on Day 2. Achieving the feat, Jadeja broke Kapil Dev's (4) record of registering a fifty and picking a fifer in the same match and became the only Indian do so.

India vs Australia: India 297/7, lead by 120 runs

Labuschagne is about to bowl and he and Cummins has some conversation with the umpire. Seems to be something about his bowling action, in the way that Labuschagne seems to be intimating the umpire how he about to bowl.

Feb 10, 2023, 16:11:57 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR! 50 partnership

Juicy half-volley from Cummins and Axar drives him back down the ground to the boundary. 50-run stand has come in 110 balls.

Feb 10, 2023, 16:06:07 IST

India vs Australia: 100 overs done, India 287/7, lead by 110 runs

India are inching closer to 300 now and Australia have a real mountain to climb. The partnership between these two is close to 50 and the visitors have to first blink the fatigue out of their eyes to keep at the batters and not let them run away with the score. Then, whenever they do manage to get India all out, they have consider how is it that they will go about chasing this lead down, leave alone setting a strong target.

Feb 10, 2023, 16:03:09 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR! Axar motors along

Short from Lyon, Axar hangs back and cuts it, Warner in play once again and puts in a spirited effort but cannot stop it. Australia are starting to look tired, a lot of red faces around the ground.

Feb 10, 2023, 16:00:30 IST

India vs Australia: Drinks taken after Jadeja leaves the field

India are 282/7 in 99 overs. Jadeja has left the field, probably for a toilet break, and the umpires have called for drinks in the meanwhile. India's lead has reached 105 and the partnership between Jadeja and Axar is on 42 off 95.

Feb 10, 2023, 15:58:45 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR!

The second ball of the 99th over from Murphy just about misses off stump. That is followed up by a loose, almost tired delivery that Axar cuts away for four.

Feb 10, 2023, 15:55:35 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR! India 277/7

Cut away by Jadeja, Warner gives chase but the ball just about eludes him. He moves to 57 off 130, India's lead reaches 100.

India vs Australia: Drinks! India 265/7, lead by 88 runs

Axar sent the last ball of the 95th from Scott Boland to the boundary with a drive wide of mid-off. He has scored 11 in 36 balls, Jadeja on 51 off 122.

Feb 10, 2023, 15:31:20 IST

India vs Australia: 50 for Ravindra Jadeja!

A five wicket haul in the Australian innings and a half century during the Indian innings. He is pretty much two players in one at the moment, three if you count the fact that he is among the best fielders in the world. He gets there in 114 balls, India 257/7, lead by 80. That is Jadeja's 18th Test fifty.

Feb 10, 2023, 15:22:13 IST

India vs Australia: Half chance off Axar!

What does Scott Boland have to do to get a wicket today. Squares up Axar and the outside edge falls just short of Smith at first slip.

India vs Australia: 250 up for India

India's lead is now 73. This has been an attritional day and India seem to be creeping ahead once again now. Batting is only going to get more difficult from here and

Feb 10, 2023, 15:04:15 IST

India vs Australia: India 246/7, lead by 69 runs

Pat Cummins is at his best at the moment and Jadeja has done well to negate him thus far. He is on 42 off 94 while Axar Patel at the other end has scored one run in 10 balls.

Feb 10, 2023, 14:50:56 IST

India vs Australia: GONE! Fifer on debut for Murphy!

Murphy's debut just gets better and better and considering India are down to their last three wickets, it could get even better from here. Big appeal for LBW turned down by the umpire, Cummins calls for the DRS. Full and sped onto Bharat quickly, no bat on it at all and smashing into middle after pitching in line.

KS Bharat lbw b Murphy 8 (10), India 240/7

Feb 10, 2023, 14:49:12 IST

India vs Australia: India 240/6, lead by 63

KS Bharat is on eight off nine, Jadeja on 37 off 87. Murphy and Cummins are alternating and Bharat got his first boundary off the former.

India vs Australia: GONE! Cummins gets Rohit

Off the very next ball! Cummins goes full and straight, maybe a slight movement and it squares up Rohit. Fantastic delivery from the Australian captain to end his Indian counterpart's epic innings. Nagpur applauds Rohit as he walks off.

Rohit Sharma b Cummins 120 (212), India 229/6, lead by 52 runs

Feb 10, 2023, 14:36:02 IST

India vs Australia: DROPPED!

Smith has given Rohit a lifeline here. Thick outside edge, Smith not too quick to react as the ball comes to his right.

India vs Australia: The players return

Pat Cummins bowls the first over after Tea, Rohit Sharma is on strike. Australia have taken the new ball.

Feb 10, 2023, 14:14:09 IST

India vs Australia: Tea! India 226/5 in 80 overs, lead by 49 runs.

Rohit is on 118 off 207 balls, Jadeja on 34 off 82. The partnership between them is on 58 off 125 which is India's best since the 76-run opening stand between Rohit and Rahul. Rohit's innings, safe to say, is now gaining epic proportions.

Feb 10, 2023, 14:03:50 IST

India vs Australia: CLOSE CALL FOR JADEJA!

Big shout for LBW from Murphy and the Australians, umpire shakes his head and Cummins takes the review. It is umpire's call on impact and the Australians have their hands in their heads.

Feb 10, 2023, 13:58:14 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR! India 223/5

Jadeja cuts Labuschagne away square and Boland is a little late to react to it there. The ball rolls away to the boundary. Jadeja moves to 33 off 71, partnership between him and Rohit is now on 55 off 107.

Feb 10, 2023, 13:54:42 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR!

Rohit gets down the pitch early and whips Murphy wide of short midwicket. His movement converted the ball into a half volley, no chance for the long-on fielder to come accross. Rohit moves to 115.

Feb 10, 2023, 13:43:49 IST

India vs Australia: India 210/5 in 74 overs

Rohit Sharma is on 109 off 188, Ravindra Jadeja is on 27 off 65. India's lead is 33 and slowly, the damage that those two early wickets had done in this session is being undone. India have another run scorer yet to come remember in Axar Patel.

Feb 10, 2023, 13:34:27 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR! Lucky one for Jadeja!

Outside edge and it dies just in front of Smith at first slip. The ball then runs behind for the boundary. Almost a well-deserved wicket there for Boland but such is the game.

Feb 10, 2023, 13:30:51 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR!

Jadeja cuts it late, which is probably why it wasn't a catching chance despite taking the edge. That and the fact that the ball did not pick any part of the pad on its way to the bat as Lyon gets it to keep moving into the right hander.

Feb 10, 2023, 13:27:53 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR! Jadeja is the first to hit Boland for a boundary

Wide and pitched up, probably the first delivery from Boland in this innings that was hittable and Jadeja drives wide of mid-off. The first four to have been hit off Boland and it has come in his 12th over. A complement for the bowler as much as it is for the batsman.

Feb 10, 2023, 13:14:03 IST

India vs Australia: Drinks, India 189/5, lead by 12 runs

Rohit is on 103 off 178 and Jadeja on 12 off 33. The two batters seem to have shored things up after that little gap opened with Kohli and SKY's dismissals. Australia will want to keep plugging away here, they are both batters who can really switch gears and so the longer they stay, the more the chances of them being just batted out.

Feb 10, 2023, 13:02:16 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR! Jadeja motoring along

Short outside off from Murphy, Jadeja cuts it away to the boundary. He moves to 11 off 22. The Australians have given Jadeja a couple of freebies, they don't want the pressure that's on the Indians to dissipate in any way.

Feb 10, 2023, 12:58:42 IST

India vs Australia: India 178/5

That was an extraordinary shot to say the least from Rohit to get to his century. A single off the next ball helped India level the scores and they moved into the lead after a single off the last one.

Feb 10, 2023, 12:54:00 IST

India vs Australia: FOUR! Century for Rohit Sharma!

There it is, a big wide smile as he points his bat to the dressing room. Rohit's ninth Test century, his first as captain and his first against Australia. That was hit against the spin inside out over mid-off and cover, a brilliant shot, there have been many that can be called that in this innings. Rohit has reached three figures in 171 balls.
