India vs Australia 1st Test Highlights: IND thrash AUS by an innings and 132 runs, take 1-0 lead in series

In the end, there was clear gap between bat and ball and Axar had grounded his backfoot. Unclear if Australia keep their review or not.

Virat Kohli could only score 12 off 26 before falling off the very first ball of the second session. This just extended his poor recent form in Test cricket but former India captain Kapil Dev feels that Kohli can turn things around soon, just as he has done in recent months in limited overs. "I think he will make an impact, because he still has a lot of hunger left in him, which we all can see. The first match is very important. If he makes runs, then his playing style changes. When there is a bigger player the first Test match is always important. If he even makes 50, then I can predict that he will make 2-3 centuries in this series because both teams will get two chances. We need to keep that in mind," Kapil said on YouTube channel 'Uncut'.

The entire Australian squad gathered in the middle, something that has not really happened often since Andrew McDonald took over. Australia have to do some serious catch up today, starting maybe a wicket or two in the very first over itself, if they want to avoid a big loss in this match at this point. 

The century yesterday was Rohit's ninth of his Test career and his first as captain of the team. This made him just the fourth player to have scored a century in all three formats as captain of a side. The others are South Africa's Faf du Plessis, Sri Lanka's Tilakaratne Dilshan and current Pakistan skipper Babar Azam. 

Before he was known as a reincarnation of AB de Villiers in T20 Internationals, Suryakumar Yadav was known for being a dependable hand in Mumbai's middle order in domestic cricket. We saw a glimpse of that side of his game during his brief stay in the middle but the manner in which he was dismissed would be a disappointment for him. SKY, facing Nathan Lyon for the first time in his career, went for an expansive drive first ball and the delivery snuck into the kilometres of space he left between bat and pad and took his stumps. There were quite a few voices questioning SKY's selection ahead of the marauding Sarfaraz Khan and this showing would not help his case at all. 

“Have been doing well with the bat for the last one year. That confidence is coming in handy. My technique - I always knew it was good. I work on it when I get a break. Work with the coaching staff. They tell me that I have the ability, so I try to contribute. When you go in to bat you find some difficulty (on that pitch), but it gets easier after spending some time. The talk with Jadeja was to not lose focus. Till the time we bat tomorrow the pitch will play well, and when we get the chance to bowl - we'll find help (laughs).”

It would be hard to find a player more consistent than Ravindra Jadeja at the moment in all departments of the sport of cricket. His fielding standards have never fallen, he delivers with the ball in nearly all conditions and he is a hard, hard man to dismiss anywhere in the world. Jadeja ended big partnerships and fast tracked the collapse of Australia's bottom five on Day 1 and is now threatening to bat Australia into oblivion. 

“Coming into the game, I was sort of hoping to get one wicket at least. To finish the day with five on debut is a special day. It's been a pretty surreal week, it's all happened quite fast. From the moment I found out I'll be playing until now, just tried to embrace it and enjoy everything that comes with it. I try to make sure that my body language is quite good and I believe in myself. The message I got from a lot of guys was don't change anything that I've been doing in state cricket. I looked at Jadeja, Ashwin and Axar, they were so consistent with what they were doing. They didn't go searching for too much. That was something I was looking at - putting enough balls in that area to ask questions for long enough. It's awesome to have them (family) here, I found out two nights before, it was mad rush for them. They had a 2 AM leave from home to get to the airport. they're really grateful that they had the opportunity to get in here.”

It is not often you see a player being fast tracked into the Test team in Australia and Murphy showed why it was him and not the more experienced Ashton Agar who was chosen as Nathan Lyon's spin partner. He was easily Australia's most dangerous bowler and ended the day with figures of 5/82 in 36 overs. The 22-year-old is only playing his eighth first class match and he has never bowled even close to the number of overs he has here in an innings before. This is also his first first class fifer overall. 

At the end of Day 2, Australia were in the phase where a number of visiting teams have been in recent Test matches - where they get the Indian batting lineup down to their last three or two wickets for a score that can't be considered too competitive before a partnership just sucks the life out of them. Normally, it is helmed by Rishabh Pant and then by Ravindra Jadeja, this time, it is between Jadeja and Axar Patel. Pretty much India's last recognised batting pair, the score was 240/7 when Axar joined Jadeja in the middle, their lead 63 runs. At Stumps, the pair took India's score to 321/7 and their lead on 144, which is a mountain on this pitch. Their partnership is on 81 off 185 balls, India's best of this innings. 

Rohit Sharma set a new Indian record on Day 2, by becoming the first captain from the country to slam a ton across all three formats in international cricket. The batter smacked 120 runs off 212 balls, packed with 15 fours and two sixes.

Jadeja bagged a five-wicket haul on Day 1 and then followed it up with an unbeaten half-century on Day 2. Achieving the feat, Jadeja broke Kapil Dev's (4) record of registering a fifty and picking a fifer in the same match and became the only Indian do so.

A good delivery by Lyon and a solid front-foot defence from Jadeja to end the day! No run!

Axar directs this delivery by Murphy to long-off and gets his second Test fifty! CRUCIAL KNOCK AND HE RAISES HIS BAT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE APPLAUSE!

The very first ball of that over is dispatched to the boundary by Axar. India's lead reaches 125. 

Labuschagne is about to bowl and he and Cummins has some conversation with the umpire. Seems to be something about his bowling action, in the way that Labuschagne seems to be intimating the umpire how he about to bowl. 

Juicy half-volley from Cummins and Axar drives him back down the ground to the boundary. 50-run stand has come in 110 balls. 

India are inching closer to 300 now and Australia have a real mountain to climb. The partnership between these two is close to 50 and the visitors have to first blink the fatigue out of their eyes to keep at the batters and not let them run away with the score. Then, whenever they do manage to get India all out, they have consider how is it that they will go about chasing this lead down, leave alone setting a strong target. 

Short from Lyon, Axar hangs back and cuts it, Warner in play once again and puts in a spirited effort but cannot stop it. Australia are starting to look tired, a lot of red faces around the ground.
