India vs Australia 1st Test Highlights: IND thrash AUS by an innings and 132 runs, take 1-0 lead in series

He got squared up a bit by Lyon off the second last ball of the 31st over. Then saw Rohit Sharma darting up the pitch and was a second late to respond. In the end, Ashwin runs hard and reaches the non-striker's end safely and the throw missed the stumps by a few feet anyhow. Ashwin immediately apologises to Rohit. 

He has faced 24 balls and scored 12 runs, he was on zero when the day started, remember. India are 94/1, trail Australia by 83 runs. 

Outside edge again, a thickish one off Pat Cummins, but it was in control and along the ground all along. Pretty good start from Ashwin today.  

First boundary of the day is a streaky one. Lyon bowls the third over from the end that Murphy bowled from and Ashwin played for the turn but it comes in straight. Takes the edge and runs wide of third man to the boundary. 

Todd Murphy bowled the first over of the day and Rohit Sharma ran a single in that. Australia captain Pat Cummins bowled the second and it was a much better over than any he bowled yesterday. Just two runs off it.

There is a good crowd slowly building up at the stadium. Play resumes at 9.30am, remember. 

The temperature in Nagpur is expected to stay in the mid-30s today and if Australia can't get India out quickly, they will cut a ragged bunch towards the end of the day. Thus far, it is not Lyon and Cummins but Boland and Murphy who have fared well in containing the Indians. This pitch is only going to wear down further, which means that there will be something for the Aussie spinners to use but the same applies for the Indian spinners as well. If the visitors don't get India out within the first session, they could be staring down the barrell of an inning defeat. 

If India have a good batting day, Suryakumar Yadav may be required to do what he does in T20 cricket, if he does get to bat - smash a few big ones to extend India's lead as much as possible before they declare. There were quite a few who questioned his selection ahead of Shubman Gill but now that he is here, it will  be interesting to see how he fares. 

Ashwin's three wickets took his career tally to 452 Test wickets yesterday. He is the first Indian since Anil Kumble to have crossed the 450-Test wickets mark. He has got there in 89 matches, second-fastest bowler to the milestone, behind Muthiah Muralidaran (80). Ashwin is now only the ninth player to take 450-plus Test wickets and the second Indian after Anil Kumble (619).

Rohit Sharma has hit nine fours and a six, the only maximum of the match thus far accross the Australian and Indian innings. He started the innings with two fours off the first two balls of the Indian innings. That first over bowled by Pat Cummins produced 13 runs, all scored by Rohit.

Ravindra Jadeja was seen on camera seemingly applying something on the ball or on his hands near the ball and former England captain Michael Vaughan was one of the earliest to point it out on social media. While there is nothing conclusive in the footage, it does look like Jadeja is taking something from Mohammed Siraj and then rubbing his hands and finger near and around the ball. "Interesting," was all former Australia captain Tim Paine had to say about it on Twitter. It isn't just a social media war though, match referee Pycroft brought the issue to the notice of India captain Rohit Sharma and Jadeja. According to reports, the Indian team management told the referee that Jadeja only used pain relief on his finger.

“Very happy with the way I was bowling. I was enjoying my bowling. Playing after 5 months, playing Test cricket, it's tough. I was prepared for it and I was working hard on my fitness as well as on my skills at NCA. I played a first-class game (Ranji) after a long time and I bowled almost 42 overs. It gave me a lot of confidence to come here and play a Test match. There was no bounce on the wicket, I was targeting the stump-to-stump line. The odd ball was spinning and the odd ball was going straight. Being a left-arm spinner, if you get batsmen out caught behind or stumped, you always give credit to the ball. In Test match cricket, whatever wicket you take, you are happy with that. I was working hard on my bowling when I was in Bangalore at the NCA. I was bowling 10-12 hours everyday and that helped me a lot. I was working on my rhythm because I knew that I have to play Test match and I have to bowl long spells.”

The bespectacled Todd Murphy reminded Mark Waugh of a young Dan Vettori. Whether he will have a career as illustrious as the former NZ captain and current Australian bowling coach remains to be seen but he made a fantastic start to it. Murphy was pretty much the most accurate Australian bowler on Day 1 and deservedly got his first Test wicket in KL Rahul towards the end of the final session. 

The former India skipper had a checquered stay in the first slip region. He dropped Steve Smith in the first session, which was one of the few clear-cut chances that came his way, leading to Mark Waugh to utterly slate his fielding technique in the commentary box. He eventually held on to Pat Cummins's edge off R Ashwin later in the day though. Now, it remains to be seen how he fairs against off-spin, his nemesis in recent years, and whether he can shake off his poor Test form just as he has done in white-ball cricket in the last few months. 

The Australia captain is widely rated as the best Test fast bowler in the world and with good reason but anyone watching him yesterday would have questioned his credentials to be in the team, let alone at the top of the pecking order in the world. Cummins either bowled too straight and full or strayed to the pads too much and was hammered by his India counterpart Rohit Sharma every time he did that. He bowled four overs and gave away 27 runs at an economy of 6.75. The next worst economy was spinner Nathan Lyon's at 3.30 in a whopping 10 overs. Scott Boland, Australia's second pacer, in stark contrast gave just four runs in three overs, although that could be down to the fact that he mostly bowled to the far more docile KL Rahul.

The visitors got off to a shaky start, losing their openers even before Rohit Sharma even considered tossing the ball to his spinners. It then looked like Marnus Labuschagne and Streve Smith had the bit between their teeth, looking as comfortable as ever against Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin and Axar Patel. That was until Jadeja's bowling and some lightning-fast glove work from debutant wicketkeeper KS Bharat sent back Labuschagne on 49 off 123 balls. Jadeja got Matt Renshaw out off the very next ball and a couple of overs later, it was Smith's turn to fall to the all-rounder. The former Australia skipper walked back after scoring 37 off 107 but Australia didn't really crumble after that. Alex Carey's counter-punch helped ensure that they scored over 100 runs in the second session despite losing those wickets. He put up a 53-run stand off 68 balls with Peter Handscomb before falling on 36 off 33 to R Ashwin. Handscomb held on as Australia's longish tail started falling before himself being sent back by Jadeja on 31 off 84. Australia eventually folded for 177.

The nightwatchman is the sacrificial lamb of a Test batting order and India have got Ashwin in that role at the moment, a batter who averages 27.41 in 126 innings, has scored 3043 runs with a whopping five Test centuries. Quite a peculiar choice for a sacrificial lamb. Wonder if Ashwin is in there as much more than just someone to guard the wicket.

India made a strong start to their innings after bowling out Australia for 177 thanks to captain Rohit Sharma racing to his half century in just 66 balls. He put up a 76-run opening stand with KL Rahul, who was much more circumspect with his knock and fell on 20 off 71 balls towards the end of the day's play. Ravichandran Ashwin, who had been sent in as nightwatchman, will be giving Rohit company when play resumes on Day 2. India trail Australia by 100 runs. 

This will be the final update for the day as the focus will be on Rohit Sharma, when action resumes on Day 2. The Indian skipper has already completed his half-century and will be hoping to convert this into a daddy hundred. 

India at stumps were batting at 77/1, trailing by 100 runs. 

R Ashwin, who walked in as the night watchman, will lead the proceedings alongside the skipper. The spinner is yet to open his account.

“You just can’t get bogged down on this pitch and just try and survive. The thing is you have to look for runs, that is important. You have to keep the scoreboard moving. You can’t allow the bowlers to get on top,” - Dilip Vengsarkar

In an interesting turn of events, former Australia batter Mark Waugh reserved the ultimate praise for Cheteshwar Pujara. 

While doing commentary on Day 1 of the first Test in Nagpur, the ex-Australia cricketer said: “Rohit Sharma class player, Virat Kohli world class, Pujara - Thor in the side.”

Two Australian batters got out for ducks while three batters including both openers were dismissed after scoring just one run in the first innings.
