IND vs AUS Highlights 3rd Test, Day 1: Usman Khawaja's 60 powers Australia to 156/4 at Stumps, lead by 47

Some relief for Rohit Sharma as he times the ball from the middle of his blade and hits the pacer for a boundary. 

Gill too maintains a similar approach against Cameron Green and hits the all-rounder for two fours. IND: 22/0

Cameron Green will share the new ball duties with Starc with Shubman Gill on strike.

Australia missed two opportunities to pack Rohit in the first over. The first one was a caught-behind appeal and the second was LBW.

Mitchell Starc starts off strong as he beats the outside edge of Rohit Sharma. He does the same a ball later and maintains the tempo. 

TV replay confirm there was an edge in the first ball but Australia didn't opt for a review.

Meanwhile, Rohit gets off the mark with a boundary.

Mitchell Starc will lead the attack for Australia.

Rohit Sharma: “It is a pretty good dressing room and like you said the morale is high. The guys are confident about their skills which is a good thing moving forward. We have played a lot of cricket (here) but this one (surface) is slightly different. Looks little dry and you have to adapt your skills and be at it all the time. We are there yet (WTC final) and we have to come and win this game, we have to try and repeat the things we did in the first two Tests. It is important to stay present.”

Steve Smith: “Hopefully we can execute our skills early and out the Indian batters under pressure. It (break) came in at a good time for us, obviously disappointing how we ended the last Test match and the guys have had time to reflect, rest and get back into preparation. Just stick to our methods for longer periods, we went away from it especially in the second innings in the last game.”

Shubman Gill finally gets a chance ahead of KL Rahul. The latter has drawn massive flak over his performance, while Gill heads into the contest on the back of some scintillating form.

Rohit Sharma wins toss, opts to bat. 

"Historically it is a very good wicket to bat on because it has small boundaries and lightning fast outfield. But this surface could be difference. This wicket looks similar to the ones we saw in the first two Test matches. We are going to see lots of spin. This is a very overcooked wicket, it is dry and has started to crumble. Bat first if you win the toss."

However, things aren't going that well for Virat Kohli in the longer format.

Kohli's performance in recent years: 

2020: 116 runs in 3 matches at an average of 19.33 with one fifty in six innings 2021: 536 runs in 11 matches at an average of 28.21 with four fifties in 19 innings 

2022: 265 in six matches at an average of 26.50 with one fifty in 11 innings

In this series: Kohli has amassed 76 runs from three innings at an average of 25.33.

It is yet another landmark Test for Virat Kohli as the encounter marks his 200th international match at home. The former India batter has been an asset to the unit and in the 199 matches at home so far, he has scored 10,829 runs in 221 innings at an average of 58.22. 

This includes 34 centuries and 51 half-centuries at home, with the best score of 254*.

The positive news for Australia is their all-rounder Cameron Green regaining complete fitness. He alongside Starc are expected to start in the third encounter.

Australia will also look to carry on with three spinners in Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann.

Things will be more difficult for Australia, who won't have their skipper Pat Cummins by their side. Cummins went back to the country to be with his ailing mother. Ashton Agar, Josh Hazlewood and David Warner too have went back home. 

Steve Smith will be leading the side and we might see Mitchell Starc in action.

The pitches at Holkar Stadium is mostly made with both black and red soil. However, as per PTI reports, the curators this time have decided to use the black soil. These kind of tracks don't offer much turn or bounce.

The series has been dominated by spinners and it is just Rohit Sharma, who has notched a ton so far.

However, given the conditions here at Holkar, if India win the toss they should opt to bat first. This conditions will be ideal for the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli to pile on the runs.

Despite a dominant show, the man in focus from the Indian camp will be KL Rahul. Rahul has unable to get going in the series so far. This has led to both experts and fans call for Shubman Gill's inclusion in the XI in place of Rahul.

Rahul is also no longer the vice-captain of the side but the management has shown tremendous faith in him and he might well get another opportunity.

- A win also guarantees Rohit and Co. a spot in the World Test Championship final, which will be played at Oval in June.
