Imran Tahir has had a great season for Chennai Super Kings, picking up wickets and also keeping a lid on the runs and he ended the tournament in style against Mumbai Indians in the summit clash in Hyderabad. Tahir finished with figures of 2/23 from three overs in the final, picking up the wickets of Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, to break the back of Mumbai’s top order.
As a result of his efforts Tahir ended the tournament with 26 wickets and took over the purple cap from Delhi Capitals’ Kagiso Rabada. Tahir will soon join forces with Rabada as both look to take South Africa to ICC World Cup glory.
As if finishing as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament wasn’t enough, Tahir also managed to accomplish another huge record. With a tally of 26 wickets from 17 matches at an economy of 6.69, the South African has now taken the most wickets for a spinner in a single IPL season.
He broke the record of West Indian Sunil Narine, who had finished with 24 wickets from 15 matches in Kolkata Knight Riders’ victorious 2012 season. Tahir’s CSK teammate Harbhajan Singh had also finished with 24 wickets, although from 19 matches, in 2013, when he helped Mumbai Indians win their maiden title.
Tahir has played a pivotal role for CSK in this campaign and his partnership with Harbhajan Singh helped the ‘Yellow Brigade’ win several matches. The duo of Harbhajan and Tahir ended up with 42 wickets in the tournament.
