This was not a pitch where you could go hell for leather and expect to get away with it, and the top order paid a heavy price for ignoring that. The surface was on the slower side and rewarded proper technique and smart shot selection above all else. Tilak Varma was the one Indian batter who grasped that, staying patient and keeping things ticking. But Axar, reprieved on 11, could not make it count and was soon on his way back. Dube brought urgency and intent and did drag India back into it briefly, but it was not enough, as he was dismissed at the wrong time. But with Tilak still out there and fighting his way to a hard-earned fifty, India still fancied their chances. Matt Hollard had other ideas, stepping up to dismiss him and turning the game on its head in an instant.
