Right-arm fast Bowler

Hailing from Urlings Village in Antigua, Anderson Montgomery Everton Roberts emerged as the pioneering godfather of the modern West Indies fast-bowling dynasty. Breaking through at a time when Eastern Caribbean cricketers struggled for recognition, he became the first Antiguan to play Test cricket for the West Indies upon his debut in 1974. His arrival marked a seismic shift in global cricket dynamics, providing the initial spark for Clive Lloyd's vision of an all-pace, unyielding bowling attack capable of dominating world opposition on any surface.

Across 47 Test matches and 56 One-Day Internationals between 1974 and 1983, Roberts established a reputation as an exceptionally shrewd and lethal strategist. He captured 202 Test wickets at an average of 25.61, while adding 87 ODI wickets at an average of 20.35 with a frugal economy rate of 3.40 runs per over. In 1976, he became the fastest bowler to reach 100 Test wickets at the time, accomplishing the feat in just 19 matches and demonstrating a rare blend of rapid speed and high tactical discipline.

Tactically, Roberts was famous for inventing a psychological bouncer strategy that caught top-order batsmen completely off guard. He would deliberately deliver a slower, looser bouncer to lull the batsman into a false sense of security, only to follow it up immediately with an extraordinarily fast, lethal bouncer off the exact same run-up and action. His most famous international triumph came during the inaugural 1975 Cricket World Cup, where his ice-cool composure with the bat in a tense tenth-wicket partnership alongside Deryck Murray saw West Indies past Pakistan, paving the way for their eventual World Cup victory.

Beyond his international career, Roberts proved to be an invaluable asset in English county cricket with Hampshire and Leicestershire, taking over 800 first-class wickets across his broader playing career. He also enjoyed a stint in World Series Cricket, where his tactical intellect and mastery of the new white ball helped establish West Indies as the dominant outfit of the breakaway era. On the pitch, his stoic, expressionless mask concealed a deeply analytical cricketing mind that studied every opponent's weaknesses.

Following his retirement from active play, Roberts was knighted by the Antiguan government in 2014 for his immense contributions to Caribbean sports. He transitioned into mentorship and coaching, serving as a national selector and guiding a young generation of fast bowlers that included Sir Curtly Ambrose. Sir Andy Roberts remains celebrated across cricket history as the founding architect of West Indian pace dominance, whose tactical blueprint transformed fast bowling into an art form.
