Harbhajan Singh

Age 46IndiaINDIA
Off break Bowler

Long before off-spin was widely recognized for its fiery hostility, Harbhajan Singh injected the craft with an intoxicating blend of street-smart aggression, high-octane bounce, and a revolutionary doosra. Born on July 3, 1980, in Jalandhar, Punjab, he made his international debut in a Test against Australia at Bengaluru in March 1998, followed by his ODI debut against New Zealand at Sharjah in April 1998.

His career trajectory changed forever during the monumental 2001 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he single-handedly dismantled the dominant Australian batting lineup by claiming 32 wickets at an average of 17.03, including the first Test hat-trick in Indian cricket history at Eden Gardens. That extraordinary breakthrough established him as the spiritual backbone of India's new era under Sourav Ganguly, proving that aggressive spin could conquer any opposition.

As a crucial pillar of India's bowling unit for nearly two decades, Harbhajan established unmatched standards for sustained longevity and impact across all formats. Across 103 Test matches, he captured 417 wickets at an average of 32.46, recording 25 five-wicket hauls and five ten-wicket match hauls while establishing himself among the premier wicket-takers in red-ball history.

In white-ball cricket, he picked up 269 wickets in 236 One-Day Internationals, serving as an indispensable strike bowler across multiple World Cup campaigns. His international career was crowned with historic global glory as he played pivotal roles in India's victories at both the inaugural 2007 ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup on home soil.

Beyond his bowling craft, Harbhajan was a spirited lower-order contributor who brought a crucial extra dimension to the side with the bat. He accumulated 2,224 Test runs, highlighted by back-to-back centuries against New Zealand in 2010 that showcased his genuine batting capability during critical situations. His competitive drive seamlessly translated into franchise cricket, where he captured over 150 IPL wickets and anchored Mumbai Indians to three IPL titles as well as the 2011 Champions League Twenty20 title as captain, before adding another IPL title with Chennai Super Kings.

His immense contributions to Indian sports were recognized with the Arjuna Award in 2003 and the Padma Shri in 2009. Finishing his international journey with 711 combined wickets across formats, he cemented a lasting legacy as a pioneer who transformed off-spin bowling from a defensive containment tactic into an aggressive, match-winning force on the world stage.
