Kyle Mills

Age 47New ZealandNEW ZEALAND
Right-arm fast medium Bowler

There was a metronomic reliability to Kyle Mills' bowling that made him one of the most trusted operators in world cricket for the better part of a decade. A right-arm fast-medium bowler blessed with an unusually clean, repeatable action, Mills built his reputation not on express pace but on relentless accuracy, and the composure to execute the same plans under pressure match after match.

Born in Auckland, Mills made his first-class debut during the 1998-99 season before earning his New Zealand ODI cap against Pakistan in 2001. His Test debut came 3 years later against England at Trent Bridge in 2004, but a side strain picked up during the match forced him to return home early. It was the first of several setbacks in a career that would be repeatedly interrupted by injury. Shoulder and knee problems ruled him out of the 2007 World Cup at the peak of his powers, while persistent physical setbacks meant his Test career never got the extended run his white-ball form deserved.

It was in white-ball cricket that Mills truly excelled. His skiddy length and ability to move the ball both ways made him a nightmare for batters looking to accelerate. Mills played a key role in New Zealand's run to the 2009 Champions Trophy final, finishing as their leading wicket-taker with 9 scalps in 5 matches. He was particularly impressive throughout the tournament and rose to the top of the ICC ODI bowling rankings for the first time in his career. Kyle was also entrusted with the New Zealand captaincy on multiple occasions during white-ball tours when senior players were rested or unavailable. He led the side in a T20I and ODI assignment in Bangladesh in 2013 before taking the reins again on the Sri Lanka tour later that year in the absence of Brendon McCullum.

Mills represented New Zealand at 3 Cricket World Cups, in 2003, 2011 and 2015, and was part of the side that finished runners-up at the 2015 tournament on home soil, although he did not feature in a game. He retired from all forms of cricket in April 2015, following his teammate Daniel Vettori. He moved into coaching soon after, taking on a brief stint as New Zealand's bowling coach in 2018 before joining the Kolkata Knight Riders' support staff in 2020 as bowling coach under head coach Brendon McCullum. He remained in the role through the 2021 IPL season, working closely with the franchise's young pace-bowling talent.
