Hasaranga claimed the wickets of Malcolm Waller, Donald Tiripano and Tendai Chatara in the 34th over to become the third player in ODI history - after Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam and South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada - to take a hat-trick on debut.

The 19-year-old allrounder replaced Lahiru Madushanka in the Sri Lanka squad and he made most of his opportunity as he finished with figures of 3/15 in 2.4 overs.

Fellow spinner Lakshan Sandakan was wrecker-in-chief for the hosts as he took four wickets for 52 and was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka on Sunday.

Wanidu Hasaranga has proven himself in the Sri Lanka domestic circuit and is well known for his all-round abilities. He had a great run for Sri Lanks’s U-19 team in 2015 and 2016. He scored 775 runs and took 16 wickets from just 12 first-class matches.

Zimbabwe stunned Sri Lanka with a six-wicket victory in the opening match of their five-match series and the hosts will be desperate to level the series.
