Nainital Lok Sabha constituency has emerged as one of the most sought after segments in the state as high profile leaders from the BJP and Congress want to contest the 2019 general election from it.
Congress leader and former chief minister Harish Rawat is said to be vying for party nomination from the seat.
His daughter Anupama Rawat had put up a large number of posters in Haldwani, leading to speculations that she also wants to contest the general election from Nainital.
Former chief minister Rawat has become very active in the Nainital Lok Sabha seat by making regular visits and eating at homes of Dalits.
He, however, denied he was eyeing Congress nomination from the seat.
“I have been visiting Rudraprayag in Garhwal and Haridwar and places like Almora in Kumaon hills regularly. One cannot say that I am over active on Nainital seat only,” he said. He said eating at Dalit homes was not a new development and he had been doing this for a long time.
Name of Congress MLA from Dharchula Harish Dhami, who is said to be close to Harish Rawat, also started appearing in social media as probable candidate from the seat.
It is being said that through Dhami, the former chief minister wants to make his claims strong for ticket from the seat. Dhami said he was a disciplined soldier of the party and would do what the high command desires.
“Everybody has aspirations, but I would follow the instructions given to me by the party,” Dhami said.
For the BJP, sitting MP Bhagat Sigh Koshyari is a strong contender, but name of Pushkar Dhami, the MLA from the Khatima seat, has started doing the rounds.
Pushakar Dhami is said to be a political disciple of Koshyari and his claim is being seen as a move to make Koshyari’s claim strong on this seat.
